Default Help! GTS lower dash removal

Anyone on the plantet awake who knows how to remove the driver's side lower dash panel on the GTS? On the S4 there was a small , very useful parcel shelf but not on this thing.

I have removed the two main load bearing bolts on the central bulkhead side, I have removed the 4mm allen bolt from the gap under the dash, I have removed a small self tapping screw on the underside of the panel closest to the door.

The job lot feels loose but something on the door side is holding the panel from coming off altogether but it does not feel tight like a fastener would. Maybe there is soemthing push it that needs a good pry to break loose but do not like trying that wihtout knowing it is like that.

And why do I want to remove this? Because I am trying to trace a leak in my vacuum system that appears to be failure of the recirc flap. The conneciton to the solenoid came off and now it looks as though I am screwed to get at the solenoid valves. Impossible with the sub panel in place- probably impossible anyway - oh who designed this thing!

Regards

Fred

Default Found it!- now the next problem

Oh those folks in Stuttgart! Removed the shroud round the air duct and the little bugger is sat in there.

Now the next problem- how on earth does one undo those screws that hold the vac manifold/solenoids/ plastic cover?

I give up!

Fred

Use an offset screwdriver. Google is your friend if you don't know what it is. Having been in there twice in the last two years, I know all about your pain.

Well, managed to get the plastic shroud out of the way by pulling the radio out so I could get in with a mini ratchet and then you get the shroud out of the way to find?

Yeah- another bloody screw in the middle holding the solenoid rail in and of course the bracket that supports the radio is right behind it- game set and match!

Retribution for WW2 I suspect- grrrh!

Well, managed to get the final screw from the passenger side- quite a bit of wrist skin missing and every sinew in my body aching but at least I can work the problem a bit more.

The recirc flap actuator has definitely gone-anyone any ideas on how to pin the flap internal position only? Might as well go for the Apollo 13 syndrome.

Regards

You can pin the door by inserting a dowel pin of the correct length and bracing it against the door and plastic grate. I have seen some pretty creative solutions to this, one being two wine bottle corks, stacked end to end

Dan,

Now we are talking! I have been playing around a bit with the system and it might not be the actuatator that is causing the problem but something is. Needs a bit more work on it.

Fred,

I did it, but it has been nearly 6 years ago and my old brain can't remember the steps. I replaced it with the S4 tray, and it is wonderful to have that back!! I always use seat belts, and since the anti-submarine knee bolster is really only useful for those whose airbag goes off without the seat belt in place, I felt it was similar to using two suspenders and two belts on my trousers. Really only need one of either!

By the way, Jim Mayzurk did this even before I did. Perhaps he can remember how to overcome the glitches - and his is a '93, while mine is a '94. Doubt there is any difference.

Hi Gary,

The trick is to get the radio cassette out of the way and first that useless piece of foam, ally and leatherette. I am one of those folks who wanders around tool stores buying those useless pieces of cheapo kit you likely never need until one day.... I have a neat little reversible ratchet that takes those hex bits- worked out nicely.

Ironically one thing I do not have is an offset screwdriver-probably because "I do not know what one is".

Regards

Fred

Once the crap is out of the way it is all doable. When it goes back in think I'll wrap it is a bit of rubber sheet and bung it in like I did on the S4.

Rob,

You crease me!

I believe they are looking for those in the Smithsonian! I doubt you could use an offset driver like those in there because you have to have 90 degrees of rotation.

This is what I used once the crap was out of the way:

Unless of course the ends are offset as well!
