The early G/boxes are so easy ! Only a couple of different sockets and a pin punch required for disassembly.

That is what I am hoping to do with the one that is installed in my driver and the roller I am picking up over Christmas. I am sure that I will need your help.

Actually, both of the boxes in that video are in my garage today.
Also, Jim and I never had one opened up before that day.
Rank amateurs. Little knowledge.

Since this happened, we learned a few things.
The detent doesn't hold stuff firmly, it just helps align.
Also, Jim Bailey said when trans is stored on-end, they often get caught between gears.
Just some antidotal evidence that getting stuck between gears is not unheard of.

So fast-forward.

The mid year Euro G28-07 box we repaired, above, has bad synchros and a good LSD.
(its since been replaced in the car with a later G28-10 box from an 86.5)

The USA G28-08 box has good synchros, and open rear, but we think it was rebuilt without proper measurement / shimming of the X-dimension. It pops out of 4th on lifting foot off gas.

The plan --- build one box. Inspect and [roperly shim the USA gearset (whatever that entails) & attach the LSD from the Euro box.

That said, depending on the shape of the Euro G28-07 gearset, there is apparently another option. A magic sauce conversion that can be done. Transplant / mate the USA layshaft with the Euro G29-07 gearset. Will take a look at that possibility during the disassembly.

Maybe we do this project concurrently with Brian's project?

Sure wish John V. would join this thread and re-work his TRAILBLAZING rebuild thread for the rest of us.

On the other hand --- its all there !

(See post 123 for the pictures that originally accompanied the narrative. Can somebody here reconstruct the flow of words and pictures offline and repost?)

Ooops, (Dangler posted the same link, a few posts above.)_

Thank you for finding that older thread. I feel like I am smarter after just looking at the pics. Please feel free to include any of your work in this thread. The more information the better for everybody. I am picking up another trans over Christmas. It is installed in a 79 and will need to be removed. My desire is to learn enough to determine the fit and function of that trans before deciding to install it in my driver, or use it for parts to repair my driver. I need to know what to look for. Some of the wear pictured in the thread that you shared SHOULD be evident without a complete dis-assembly of the internals. Hopefully this will be a resource for all.

Thank you

Isn't John, who made the epic rebuild thread, the PCA tech guy for 928's that comments in Panarama publication?

Default gear ratio calc and secret sauce

Take a look at the following comparison. Note the difference in layshaft ratios and how it affects speed in any gear.

This swap was done to a friend's '84 EuroS, and the difference is very noticable. First gear doesn't do much, but 2nd thru 4th are great! And the final drive is the same. So it's basically a 3 speed plus overdrive. You can completely forget about 1st gear, always start off in 2nd... standard 'H'.

There may be more interesting "swap-ability" with the Porsche trans.
You can work with the following 928 gear ratio calulator (courtesy of FlyingDog), and draw your own comparisons.

I have no idea what is going on in this thread so I'll just quietly sit in the corner.

I think the idea is to consolidate information and people.

What about swapping a 5spd LSD tranny from an 84 for an 86.5 LSD BW? I have an opportunity to buy a low mileage 86.5 LSD and have considered it just to put mine on the road again. I currently have a broken tab in the bell housing, with all the parts to fix it, but would prefer the BW box for it's simplicity if it's feasible. I did search for this swap, but came up empty handed, so I figured what better place to post this than a 5spd thread that's already started.

This is a relatively common upgrade. Landseer just did it, with some documentation here: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsc...read-blog.html
