My son will be going to a school out of district next year and will be driving on a school permit. He had his first driving lesson today. We used the 83 944 and he did pretty good. I let him pratice in a large parking lot in 1st and 2nd. I am a big believer in learning to drive a stick first.

Use the 928. I have taught three teenagers to drive stick in my '82. The 928 is a good car to learn in as it doesn't kill easily.

Wait a second. Your son will be 14 next year and will be old enough to drive!? Holy Crap! I feel that a 16 year old now a days are too young to drive....Good luck brother!

He's in Nebraska. You can probably still get a farm permit there at 14.

Ditto! Taught my daughter how to drive a 5 speed using my 90 Audi 80 beater and made her take the driver's test in it as well... Super easy to shift with a very forgiving clutch, small enough to manuever easily, and great gas mileage... Of course, she doesnt get it why she HAS to learn on a stick FIRST... I told her because I'm a Dad and were funny like that!!!

One of my fondest memories of my Uncle Bill was a trip to see him in Florida when I was 13. My Dad had been teaching me the finer points of driving a stick at home in upstate NY ( Toyota Corolla hatchback, baby). Uncle Bill had a Datsun 280Z: "Do you know how to drive a stick?" Me: "Absolutely!" I found out that if a car has enough torque, you can miss a couple of gears and the car will keep going without stalling. Uncle Bill was very gracious while I was abusing his pride and joy. It remains on of the defining moments of my childhood.
I look forward to the time when I can do the same for my nephew or niece.

One of my first toys to drive was a 280Z. I grew up in a small town of about 800 people and one cop. I use to steal my brothers cars all the time after they went to bed and the 280Z was my favorite. Yea, it is hard to believe my boy could be driving next year by himself. Scary yes, but I am proud to say he is a very smart kid.

Very cool. Hoping to teach my two teenage daughters how to drive a stick in my S4.

And am a big fan of Z cars, have had a few myself and a couple others in the family too. So easy to work on and a ball to drive. I still check the local classifieds for them now and then.

I taught my two daughters in a 944 and they are both accident and ticket free going on about 6 years now. Hope I get the same results with our boy.

I had one of those in Texas back in the day, they called it a "hardship" license. My hardship was my dad was too lazy to drive me to school

I don't recommend them, 14 is just too dang young. I did some pretty stupid things my first year with my big old Oldsmobile Rocket V8

My brother and I had to walk to school, about 5 miles both ways. We got a ride if it was raining. Got my license at 16. Kids are to soft today, we had to earn our perks.
