I think the greatest compliment I got was from my 25 year old employee--I thought Porsches were pretty douchey-but yours isn't. It's styling.

And with possibly the worst style ever put to a vehicle, according to Wikipedia, Pontiac sold 108,493 Aztek's!

In fairness-how many of those Azteks went to rental car companies?

This is usually exactly the result with something that is far ahead of its time. People don't understand it and don't like it at the time.

Porsche wasn't giving them away like cookies, they were the top priced Porsche and my experience at the dealer was VERY negative regards the 928 on top of the dealers at the time being Aholes in general.

Lots of creative people are looking at options to replace the pop up headlights, so far I don't like any of them much, but once a "good" design turns up it might get a lot of attention and adoption.

correct ^^ -- the 928 in 1985 was the equivalent price of a 997 TT in 2007 with both years being strong economic times, 1985 the reagan recovery years, 2007 the height of the bubble before the crash. Keep in mind there are many more super-rich folk in 2007 compared to 1985 and the market for high end cars was much stronger in 07.

928S units sold in 1985 ------2600
997TT units sold in 2007 -- 1938

No matter how you slice it the 928 S model sold EXTREMELY well in comparison to other high end cars of its time (dwarfing ferrari sales and astons and lambo's) and compared to equivalently priced cars of today. The only thing that limited sales of 928's was the same thing limiting sales of F12's and Vanquish's today, lack of dough.

Ever since a very young age - I've been keen on the styling of the 928. I think it's the most beautiful Porsche ever made, and one of the most beautiful cars ever made.

I agree on that! Mine is a 6---the last of them!

Here's my car!

Very few changes have been made since I purchased it...only putting some stuff back to original (radio, shift ****, some parts in the engine bay, etc).

Very nice, my personal experience is with a V-12 as a passenger, that engine was similar to my euro in that it could pull from low speed and seem to go forever.

Just yesterday I was looking thru a classic SI from fall 1974 and it had a 2 page ad for "The Great British Car Sweepstakes!" where you could win 1 of the cars pictured -- a V-12 e-type, a TR6, an MGB, or Land Rover. All from British Leyland. Each one a classic and they went out of business, strange world. I noticed a red mgb parked next to your jag in one shot. A guy in my town has a mint TR6, I smile when I see it.

The SI had a lot of great ads; VW Dasher for $4K, 1975 Cadillac Eldorado (the last good looking caddy ex. the cien), and a FUJI bike ad comparing it to a ferrari 330GT for $24K.

The 928 has lot of things going for it but that might be the it's best attribute on the street. It is one of the few cars that Porsche ever made that looks manly to the general public.

I remember going with a friend of mine to the dealer to look at a brand new 1985. He went in the door ready to buy a 928 and had to practically beg the dealer to sell it to him, they tried everything they could to talk him into a 911. Don't know why, but I do know he was getting to the point of walking out when they finally gave up and just took his money. To this day it still stands out as the oddest thing I ever saw at a car dealer.

Yes, your assessment of the 12 cylinder E-Types is very accurate. It was around 375 horsepower, I believe. The powerband was very long and wide. The gearing was also very appropriate. All you need to do is de-smog it, proper needles, rebuild/proper distributor advance, and that thing absolutely flies. It's one of the best and most user friendly V12's around.

I also own a TR6 with 19k on it, but will be selling it in the spring. Cute, easy to work on, but very weak cars that you just cannot do much with. Fun though. I much prefer German cars from the 1980's. I'm also trying to pick up an E30 BMW eventually. I'll never sell my E-Type though. Ever. It just becomes a part of you!
