Obsessive hood opening
#31
On a hot day after a drive I turn the key back on to let the fans run some to cool down the
radiator then start the car again to let the engine cool some for a minute or two you can see the temp gauge drop right away.
Wash it towel dry under the hood, door jams, under hatch area almost after each drive then put away.

I always pop the hood after a drive for all the reasons mentioned above.

Doesn't everybody do this? Dust the wheel well liners and the wheels, wipe calipers and hubs/hats so they look new again for the next ride. Gotta say though that this is a LOT easier with the lift...

I used to pop it open because of the scorching underhood temperatures. But after I installed the modified belly pans, the engine never felt that hot anymore, so I stopped doing it.
what sort of belly pan do you have other than original????
my engine with headers gets so hot the fan comes on everytime in the summer on shut down

After reading this thread I popped my hood. It looks like I'll be "painting" the cam covers during the Top End Refresh. Chunks of the finish have come off/lose around the word PORSCHE. ARRHHH!

pop open hood to let hot air out and to release pressure from the radiator cap, check for leaks, smell, smokes, fluids, nest, leaves, cleaniness...but not everytime tho.

I virtually disassemble the car, and ship the various peices out for replating, steam cleaning, wet sanding of all painted surfaces with 2000 grit, repolymerization of all plastic bits, and so forth after each drive. It's cool because everything comes back in bubble wrap, and it's like Christmas in July, over and over again

I'm sorry guys but, don't you think you're being a bit excessive? 'OMG, the engine's HOT! *Opens hood* Breathe, baby! BREATHE!'
It's a CAR, gentlemen and gentlewomen. It's designed to get hot.
And as a side note - I don't know why Porsche didn't just put an electric fan in instead of the hydraulic one. My 924 has the factory electric fan still installed and continues running after shutoff until it gets to a certain temperature (not timed, sometimes turns back on on hot days after running), making opening the hood obsolete

No, there is no free lunch in physics but could opening the hood have benefits?
After driving, if the hood remains closed, exit of heat is impeded and everything in the engine compartment gets heat soaked more than while driving. If the hood is opened, the heat will rise and exit rapidly, more rapidly than closed with fan running, thus minimizing heat soak.
I am currently fighting “crumbling electrical syndrome” in the engine bay.
I wonder if this phenomenon would be lessened by religious hood opening after driving.
Also, given a properly functioning cooling system, does a spirited drive generate more engine compartment heat than a leisurely drive?

There's always the option of thermal barrier coating your headers, if they are not yet coated. That makes a difference in terms of underhood temperatures. Check with your engine builder.
If you don't mind the looks, you could also put 968 TRS style NACA ducts on the hood and direct the air flow towards the headers with a hose. I assume that you don't have the stock intake tubes fitted anymore.
By the way, can we see some photos of the engine compartment?

Hey Tuomo-
Check out this thread, post 15. Andy had been working on a CF intake plenum, not sure what the status of that is.
