[QUOTE=P928s2;10047263did you keep it? The coin? They're getting pretty rare as we've had the euro for 12y now
[/QUOTE]

Yes but I'm worried. I have children and the Franc looks alot like game tokens from our favorite skating rink
One year it was used in a school show-tell-project!

Default Problem 1

After doing the maintenance I noticed a few odd things, but really didn't think them through. There was some welding done to the exhaust, in between exhaust manifold and the lambda probe, right before the catalyst.

Anyway, my registration had arrived and I was eager to give it another run on the highway. Right after I bought it I took it really easy, so now it was time to unleash the shark.
A grave dissapointment, while down low torque was excellent, as soon as I crossed 4000 rpm it held back and the power disappeared.
I took it back, in a bad mood, and started diagnosing. Fuel pressure, intake, ignition. Everything proved okay and I ended uo checking the exhaust.
That's when all the lights started burning. An '84 should not have a TWC, nor a O2 sensor. Following the wires I found they lead nowhere. The LH system does not support this.

So I got out the disc cutter and found the following:

Somehow, somewhere, somebody decided to equip the car with a TWC, using left over tubes to connect the exhaust in the most horrible way. Naturally the TWC was killed by rich mixture and if that was not bad enough, the right bank was smothered by the inconsistent piping.
I quickly replaced the whole first part with stainless steel piping

and was back on the road. Engine sound was much improved after that!!
And finally, it accelerated as a Porsche should

Welcome ! The manual S2 is a great car ! With a bit more work, you could fit an X pipe to replace your welded up exhaust. An S2 is very dependant on the idle CO being set correctly. The tail pipe idle CO should be set to 1.0-1.5%. Remove the vac feed to the airpump diverter valve and block it to set up the idle CO. Otherwise it will confuse the measurement.

Use the adjuster on the MAF if necessary (3mm hex) turn clockwise to richen - it's a 20 turn pot.

If you can't get to 1% the MAF needs replacement..

Nice car, you chose wisely. Transmissions are much easier to fix than paint.

Nice car Stefan, the one color cars do look nice when the are in good condition like yours is.
Great choice of wheels, I hope you get things sorted out.

One thing I did notice was the front bumper looks pushed in a little bit,
se the lights they should be about 1/.2 inch from the edge of the cutout in the bumper cover.

If this car was in CA then it may have had the impact bumper shocks installed ,
and at some point then got hit thus pushing the bumper in,
see if you can measure the shocks to see , look up from under to get a better view.

OTOH it may have the Euro bumper CANS these dont compress like the shocks do they crumple.
Note the bumper shocks are one time use,
if they have been pushed in then they should be replaced as 5mph crash protection will not happen

Guys, Stefan is telling a story spread over several years, your comments and suggestions are great but he is way past the points he is sharing now. He is a master at suspense, there is much more to come.
I met Stefan and his car very recently and asked him to post here as I am sure many of you will love to read his escapades. Suffice to say after what I have seen and know I am completely and truly impressed with his knowledge and capabilities.
I am almost a 928 owner myself and feel so much better having a 'magician' like Stefan living so close.
I am handy with a wrench myself but he is in a different category all together.

Stefan, thanks for sharing your story here and I am sure many will be glad you did. You'll be a great asset to this community very soon, I am sure.

Stefan welcome and it sounds like there is a lot more to come.

You're very welcome, I'm sure you've realised this is something I find very fun to do. Thanks to everybody giving me the warm welcome and appreciation for my new baby.
That said, Denis and his turbo are far too kind and I'd like everybody not to hold back on their comments. I have some experience with cars and lately also with the 928, but as a technical trainer the lesson I've learned and now also spread is "You don't know what you don't know"
When I run a training, I try to keep it an open session, just like a forum, where everyone can share their experiences so that everyone else can learn, and I have yet to do a training where I do not come out more knowledgable then I went in.
Therefore, holding back any comments on the assumption that I already know, will probably lead to me missing out on great little tips and tricks, or even very big and costly items!!
Trust me, I read it all and take it into account.

That is what I'm counting on, and so far I am NOT dissapointed

Thanks, it took me while to realise that myself. But I've found that the things I love the most are usually the ones I have mixed feelings about in the beginning and then grow to appreciate more and more.

The story I am telling is indeed far from over. I'll publish more tonight

On instinct, I replaced the screwed up first part with 2 separate pipes running all the way to the rear muffler. Meanwhile I've found many references telling me the X-pipe configuration is better, (and it made my to do list) but so far no explanation why.
Choosing to combine the exhausts runs of cylinders has different effects @ different rpm, and the lengths of the pipes and where they come together causes the acoustics to work for or against you.
Clearly, the x-pipe is an improvement over the stock system, but could you tell me more?
