Introducing ... my '84 928 S2 rebuild

Hi, I'm Stefan, born and raised in a little town, Zonhoven, Belgium. 38 years of age. I joined Rennlist last year to read and learn, but was encouraged recently to introduce myself and my P928
About 2 years ago I gave in to a boys dream, right after my best friend slapped me by the head and told me "it's time to grow up and get a decent car." He was already purchasing his third Porsche and I was still playing with VW's.

it didn't take me long to realise a 928 was the car for me, a great project with loads of potential. A massive V8 built from scratch by this legend company.

Living in Belgium has downsides and benefits. A big consequence is the climate with changing seasons. For me this means I have about six months to work on a car, but then I want it to be roadready so I can enjoy the other half of the year.

Looking for a 928 is not particularly hard as we are a small country and in our neighbourhood it was a fairly popular car in the past. Finding a decent one was that much more difficult since they are so expensive to maintain, it seems as if nobody did.
I saw wrecked cars that really nobody should dare to buy, and of course exemplary ones that were unaffordable. Nevertheless this educated me on my whishes, do's and don'ts.
Finally, I had decided on the car of my whishes: A 928 S2 manual, with the options LSD, Sunroof, sport suspension and Porsche sound system. (because of the nicer door panels)

It took me another 3 months, but then I located my car a couple of 100 km's east in Germany. This is what it looked like @ the dealership.

An S2, built in 1984, that spent the first 10 years of it's life in California, and then was returned to Germany, A bit rough on the edges, but I was nuts about it and couldn't wait any longer. SOLD

Nice ride and welcome to the tank

Welcome to the shark tank. That's a very nice looking 928 you have there, I think you did very well.

welcome! funny that it went back to europe after being in the US, bet that doesn't happen often!

P928s2 12-04-2012 03:44 PM

Thank you very much.
The story I'm about to tell is one of two years however. And not all experiences were equally high. In fact, there was 1 particularly low. But that's later, I promised my friend I'd tell the tale in the order it happened ;-)

I often wonder why it came back, my idea is that it wouldn't meet california emissions anymore. But I am happy it did.

Welcome to the forum.

What is the name of that paint colour?

Very nice car. Let's see some updated pictures and more of your story.

I really like the burgundy interior with cloth inserts. (I have a thing for burgundy interiors, where most here don't)

What's the exterior color? Kiln Red? Ruby Red? Garnet Red? I can never figure that out.

coming home

The car was not without trouble, it had a faulty HVAC, no speedometer and a bad 2nd syncro. The interior was well lived and dash cracked from the californian sun,
None of these things scared me, as the most important was that it needed to be accident free, so a perfect chassis and proper paint work.

It took me two weeks to get the paperwork in order and then I drove it home. Immediately a couple of hundred km's as a proper test drive. The single most annoying thing that trip was the HVAC being stuck on heating. Had to drive all the way with windows and sunroof open, 4 degrees Celcius outside.
Later that day, freshly washed on my driveway:

It is the Ruby red paint, with a wine red interior

Looks very clean, Wyatt. Unfortunately mine was not that nice, otherwise I would not have changed it.

Very nice looking car. Welcome! Mine's an 84 German spec as well - with bad synchros.

Nice car..welcome!

Thanks a lot, guys. I'm feeling very welcome and right @ home. I'm sure a lot of the things I'll be talking about will seem very familiar.

As I imported the car from Germany, Belgian registration took a while. Luckily it is an oldtimer (>25 y) and this allows you to skip a few steps and speed up the process. In the time I could not drive it(2 months), I already started on the car, giving it it's basic maintenance and check-ups. HVAC basic functionality was regained by installing new vacuum lines.

I also wanted to change something else. The outside appearance of the car has always been disturbed by the gullydeckel wheels. I never liked them, Phonedials and clubsport are great but not these. So I went looking for new ones.
I've always loved Cup III, but these are a quite common look, 996 turbo's are also great but while looking for them I found these:

After moving back and forth, I am now fully convinced this is the look for my car.

That's what turned me on to them back in the day!

I used to have a 87. One day I was working deep inside the dash and found a 5Franc coin from Belgium dated 1986.
Maybe it was from a factory worker who came from there?

 It probably fell in during shipping as a lot of cars left for the USA from Antwerp.

did you keep it? The coin? They're getting pretty rare as we've had the euro for 12y now
:burnout:
