The AFM is toast, and so is the throttle body. I never seen one this corroded. We managed to shop-vac out the oxide dust even from the cylinders. There wasn't enough time to get all the cylinders clean so, at the moment, it only turn over half a revolution but I'm confident we'll get it to rotate all the way.

I'll post pics when I get them off site.

No need. He has two spare ones and the local Porsche only wrecker probably has a few more too. Shipping from California would be a deal breaker.

It was unbelievable. I am not as convinced as Imre that it will run without removing the heads. But stranger things have happened. The starter is corroded into the housing and even a bfh wouldn't get it out. The alternator is toast as well. Filled the couple of cylinders with varsol to see if it will dissolve some of the **** in there and we can vacuum it out. I would rather save this engine then do a swap out.

Here is the throttle body. It is completely filled with aluminum oxide.

I was able to get the crank to go full circle today. Added varsol to the cylinders to try and wash some of the oxide out. Plenty of compressed air and vacuuming and it now turns full circle.

I know that there is leakage past the rings, but am hoping they loosen up when we get it running. A sea-foam treatment will be in the works.

Does anyone know off the top of their head if the intakes from the 4.5 and 4.7 are the same? I would prefer to cannibalize the 4.5 motor first before the spare 4.7.

Ach Du Liber! Das ist einen grossenfluckinmess! However, car restoration is a blast. I do the same thing with old boats but...won't discuss it here. You have already made progress in turning the engine over by hand...and there will be many surprises along the way both pleasant and otherwise...but...that's to be expected. It's whole, not full of holes, and wholly restorable.

Pictures are best...they tell the story but your brand of side-glance humor is a huge plus!

I remember back in the late 80's a guy who had a shop for European cars had a 928 sitting there...and sitting and sitting. It was silver. He said if I can fix it, I can have it. Turns out the timing belt was broken and I didn't know that then....took many years and lots of learnin' to come to that conclusion. The engine would turn over but not start. It was an early car, non-interference setup...I could've had a free 928.

You have a great project in hand there. It will be a constant work-in-progress but I'll bet you'll get it in primo track shape very quickly.

I think it's awesome!

Thanks! If I need them, I will let you know.

I have a spare 4.5 that I was going to (and may still) boost with twin turbos's and stand alone fuel injection.

I can use the intake from it as long as they are the same. The AFM certainly looks the same so I am going to assume that they are and install it.

Rod, if the intake gaskets between the tubes and the head are the same, the 4.5 tubes and the rest of the intake will bolt up and be good enough to run it. Might leave a few HP on the table but the blowby that the #2 and #7 has at the moment needs to be treated anyways. Just to get the engine running, the 4.5 spider will be fine.
