Going to a LS varient is a good way to go if done right. I have no purist motives if something makes sense. I would love to have a vette 6 speed in my car. The OP from previous posts pushes the idea of a Chevy carbed 350 in a 928 that puts out 450HP. That is where I am getting my numbers from. I doubt that a carbed 450HP Chevy 350 would get better than 10mpg. Maybe I am wrong, but if I am mistaken what do you think it would get for MPG in a 928?
I don't know where your getting your mpg #'s. Had a LS3/436 hp in my 08 Corvette 6 spd auto and got 26-27 mpg highway. The plan now is to install a LS376/525 hp in a retired 80 928 along with a C5 6spd manual and expect to get close the the same mpg. I would of liked to have kept the stock 219 hp motor that came out of a 79 and supercharged it, but would of wound up with lets say lets say 325-350 hp? I wanted more power than that and so opted to go this route. As it stands now, the GM Performance motor, starter, serpentine system that includes a new alternator, a/c compressor, p/s pump, harness and computer delivered to my door was $ 8,636 and that's with a 2 year warranty. The used Z-06 6 spd manual trans/diff/tq tube/shifter (16,000 miles) delivered was $ 2,500. Add a Stage 2 clutch, pressure plate, t-out, mid weight billet flywheel comes in at $ 700. I sold the low mileage 928 motor and plan on selling the trans/diff soon to defer some of these swap costs. T

I was looking at one of those transverse V-6 engines/transmissions in an older Buick.
Sure seems like it would fit in a Ferrari.
That would be cheaper and better also. Right?
And I'm betting the Ferrari guys would think it was a great idea, too!

I get the argument about not converting a GTS or highly cared for original. Most 928's if any, running around these parts, are not pristine and/or just sitting in driveways or the salvage due to lack of knowledge or economics. Every system has a weakest link, and I question, Can the factory trans even handle LS3 power? Does it shift smooth as butter even with a new clutch? Can I go to Autozone and get an inexpensive part the same day? Can I diagnose any parameters with my laptop? Just a few Questions from a "non" purist.

Were I to do a swap, and I walked into this place five years ago GungHo to do one, it would be with a good original paint 78/79 AT, and would not use a Chevy.***
Number one reason I did not try a swap, too expensive. I drove out to Las Vegas and talked to the Renegade guys, and they would not give me a price for a standard swap. Vague at least $20k, and that I needed to be prepared to pour in more to cover any issues, plus I was on my own for smog in Calif, no guarantee it would pass. I joined all of the swap forums, and talked to all the shops in Calif that actually did swaps, and the money required never became reasonable. More than one shop I talked to said they would never do another one.
Lots of swaps are done, plenty of them in Calif. so it can be done, but it takes some unique skills to do it, and I only found a couple shops focused on doing them, usually a single type or model of vehicle. Many of the swaps are technically illegal in Calif, but slip past loose visual exams at flexible inspection stations.
***78/79 are cheapest, easy to find in a nonsunroof, and use Kjet non electronic injection so no need for integration with the factory system. 5 spds won't handle serious amounts of power, and with a big motor the AT which will handle loads of power is still plenty fun. Chevy swaps are all over, I would love to see a smooth running high revving Ford mod motor in a 928, its suits it I think.

If the Ford Mod motor fits in a 944, then it would have plenty room in the 928 bay. Go for it.

I have been an RL member for 10 years now and this type of purist/non-purist discussion never fails to amuse me. Who exactly is a 'purist'? We've all accepted mods and changes (for the better usually) such as window switches, Ford rads when we want to yet scream at others when they do a mod we don't particular like. To each his own as they say, or spend your money how you want to. I don't want to point fingures but take a read of the Dinsdale 6 sp Chevy tranny and possible complete drive train mod and see who's drooling over it and who's got customers wanting one and who can't wait for the kit. Sounds contradictory since we're still talking about Chevy parts. So do we want to be 'purist' or what?
Personally, as an Engineer I go for the engineered to be better mods vs stuffing a Chevy engine in my engine bay (laziness as Simard put it) and I get a boner only from Simard's ITBs but I also want that 6sp Chevy mod if it is affordable. So I cannot call myself a die-hard purist and attack other folks who's done exactly that, whether it was a cheap or lazy mod. In my line of work (Nuke) a mod's a mod.
My 2 cents. Damn, I need a drink now.

I would rather see a boss 5.0 than an LS. Forged internals, 8k redline, 32 valves, 440 hp and weighs only 440 lbs. Seems to be a better fit, and for $11k complete in the crate, cost effective. Or for $3k more, a 12.5 compression 5.0 cobra jet would be awesome in a shark with a tr6060 and 4.11's.
