the single best thing I did to my new racer was have Doc Brown rebuild a new (to me) trans..... If shifts GREAT.....before, it was like rowing a steamed stalk of aspargus through marbles.....and the LSD was toasted didn't help either....

Now I can actually shift gears without grinding & have an LSD that works....

Sounds like it is time to take two apart and try to make one?

I just did that for Iceman (Brian) and it turned out pretty darn good. You'll be amazed what a fresh "4 friction plate) limited slip can do for your lap times....although the new guys with their GT-3's won't like it (even less than they like your current one.)

That thing is one hell of a lot easier to get out, on one of my lifts, BTW!

Why don't you see if there is any interest in having a transmission class, one weekend? People have been asking, for years. We could pull it out, take it and a couple of others apart (I'll take one apart while people take other transmissions apart....hands on), we could go over the parts that deteriorate, "cherry pick" parts from the others, and then build one.

Fun?

LOVE this idea............I even have two used boxes......one open diff and one LSD that we could "use"...... Well actually I have 3, but one is from an 84 5 speed open diff....both of mine are G28-03....I think that is what Jim has too

I'm interested, and have I think 4 transmissions, unfortunately one is good.

Yes I have an early 1980 28/03 box. Maybe a transmission clinic could be done for all those who wish/need to learn the ins and outs of the 5 speed... I will drop by the shop and talk with Greg see how this might be done !!! If it seems workable I can start a new thread setting up the details and work out a good date for those interested....maybe get Rob or someone to shoot lots of pictures...... for those not able to attend.
If Greg is willing to share some of his knowledge, seems like a good idea to listen.

Count me in, my vote would be one of the Fridays or Saturdays in and around the holidays, if possible. I've got a used GT transmission that needs an LSD swap and a stack of new synchros here, will bring my cameras and my GoPro with the headstrap.

Still kicking around the details about how best to do a school...spent some time with Greg today discussing it. I clearly need to have my gear box taken apart and figure out what it needs (have Greg determine) and need him to put it back together.

HF has a nice almost the right size utility cart on sale for $79, get both burners of Greg's hot plate going, tap a keg for lubrication, and see how many we could do in a weekend.

It depends 100% on how you drive.

I've seen 928 transmissions turned into a pretzel with stock power in the wrong hands.

Then you have some 500+rwhp boosted transmissions with 10's of thousands of miles without issues.

If you want to break it, you will find a way with any amount of HP. Thinking there is some "magic" number to stay under to save your equipment is a false positive.

I would be adding a cooler before worrying about how much power it can take. Funny how nobody sells a kit for that when it's a best seller in the Corvette world to keep their transmissions from grenading...........
