Enjoy your hunt.

The best advice is work out before you buy what you want. Sounds simple, but its hard to do when your heart strings will tug at you!

Questions you should be asking yourself:

Auto or Manual? (You've already decided )
Which body style? (no spoilers/S spoilers/S4/GTS)
Which engine? (4.5, US 4.7, Euro 4.7, S3, Late 32V)
Purpose? (daily driver, weekend driver, concours, investment, restoration, customize, track)
Any specific options? (LSD, Sunroof or not, full leather, wood inlay etc.)
Any particular colours to want/avoid? (see http://www.landsharkoz.com/colourstart.htm)

Once you've decided the above, then you'll find its just a matter of looking at only the right cars until you see the right one.

In the meantime, sounds like you're on the right track of planning to see good localish examples and maybe make it to a 928 meet (often there are good cars for sale at them too)

I know you like black and it does look real good but I will tell you that my 968 stays sitting in the garage a lot because it is so hard to keep clean. The red 928 can have 5 days of garage dust on it and still be presentable in public.

Most of is I've already decided honestly -

-5 Speed
-S Model / with spoilers
-4.7
-Daily-Weekend driver - haha
-Sunroof is a must
-LSD not a must but nice

I am honestly OK with red. Silver, Black, Red is my pecking order. I'd have to think real hard to say no about a car with everything I want that is a red car. Yes, black is a pain in the *** to keep clean. I had an older Black BMW - it only stayed clean because I am literally maniacal about car cleanliness. But yes, it was a pain.

It's going to take a bit to find the right car, but I'm confident within the next couple months or year there's a 928 with my name on it.

WHAT is the likelihood of me finding a Euro spec car?

Pretty good as there are a fair number of grey market imported euros in the USA - and it'll put you way ahead on the power.

I take it you're not >6' tall? Sunroof is problematic if you're much taller than 6' I'm 6'2 and had to sell my '87 with sunroof as I just couldn't stand the lack of headroom. [

Yes there are members here who'll swear they don't have trouble fitting, but the lying down and back driving position just sucks compared to actually fitting in the car properly (the extended hub steering wheel is a poor solution to the reach/rake problem).

If you don't mind red then that opens up a lot more cars My "must haves" basically meant I couldn't be fussy about colour (S4, no sunroof, 5-speed = very very few cars to choose from), so I have two Red ones

Fortunately the red ones are much faster.

I am 5'8" so well under that limit.

I'd really like a Euro spec car - in looking at the specs, it's clearly an advantage on the power aspect. Red is fine...it's a good Porsche color...

Can't have that color :/ the blue metallic and that red/rust/orange metallic just aren't for me. I'm also set on a euro spec car...the power is irresistible.

That's the sort of car id like though. Nice.

The unusual colours have grown on most of us to the point where we'd rather have one than black/white/red/silver

Good move planning on getting a Euro - the cost of modifying a US 4.7 (or 4.5) to similar power levels is very high.

The other alternative you may want to investigate is a US 85/86 32V model - they make good power (300rwhp with an x-pipe, chips and later fuel pressure regulator) and, in the case of the 86.5 models, have the very strong 4-pot brembo brakes found on the later-body S4.

Before you set your heart on a Eurospec, I'd suggest driving one.
They are really fun to drive fast, but power comes on late. Requires lots of revs, and torque is low. Not the best "street driving " 928.

You may love it, you may not. Definitely a different animal.

If power is a top issue I would be considering 32V boosted.

Well, I drove one today for the first time. I went to see a local 1979 928 - Silver & Black. Has about 115,000 miles on it. It's not a bad car, but I don't think it's the one for me. It was not an S model, but it did have the S model trim. It needs some stuff (well, they all do), but probably more than I'd like to tackle.

There were some problems with the trans, funny noises after shifts. A few of the synchros were probably a little worn. Power seemed to come on really late with this particular car (characteristic of the 928 in general?). The shifter was really sloppy - hard to tell what gear you are in unless you were nailing it and going through the gears. Some sort of bushings/linkages loose/etc I assume. Noticed a few electrical problems...coolant gauge wasn't working, turn signal flasher stayed on constantly, handbrake light on constantly. Headlights ok though. AC belt disconnected (typical it seems...although I'd like for my car to have working AC).

The paint wasn't bad, there were a few little spots. It's a three foot wonder. With a little work it could be a perfect driver paint job.

I will say - the car handles and feels incredible. It's like a tank. It's probably the best "feeling" car - heavy, planted to the ground, all around great. The seats are comfortable. The road presence of that car is very, very neat.

This particular car though, I think, is just a bit too tired for me.

I accomplished two things today though - got started looking at cars, and solidified the fact that I absolutely want to own a 928. This car in properly cared for, un-tired condition (which I feel this car was), is going to be a LOT of fun.

What was the asking price?
