Default Windshield washer fluid - De-Icer approaching alarmingly low levels!

I'm concerned that soon enough reduced levels of De-icer will cause washer fluid to be nothing more than water.

The last time this happened caused an outbreak of Legionnaires' disease, caused by a high content of bacteria in the water.

It had been noticed that prevalence of the disease was five times higher among Porsche drivers.

Does know the PPM De-icer content? Am I the only one concerned about this?

Just a little tongue-in-cheek humor, based on the now defuct ZDDP thread.

I'm surprised a resident of The South would worry on such things. Knowing of your solid Midwest roots I guess you're reflecting on other people's hardships as the Winter approaches.

My advice is to get the washer fluid rated for -35F. This will be good enough unless entering Canada in which case the sled dogs will guide you.

Yes there is a difference. Back when I worked with ag-electronics, we had a chemical injection system that we tested with water the filled with washer fluid so it wouldn’t freeze in shipping. We had to switch to RV anti-freeze because windshield washer was too inconsistent and would often crystallize, thus plugging plumbing and seizing pumps.

I think you may be the only one drinking it, and that may be the problem...

I buy and use only the super-duty Porsche brand wiper stuff. Only $60 a gallon, so you know it has to be good.

While I realize that this started as a joke, it really isn't funny to some folks...

I live in the metro Atlanta area. The environmentalists have now made it illegal to sell windshield washer fluid that has any antifreeze properties in the metro area. All of the washer fluid now on sale here clearly states, "Protects to 32 deg F".

If I want any real washer fluid suitable for winter usage, I have to go to an out-lying county, where the greens don't rule.

Roll your own! 30% isopropyl alcohol in water is good to 5oF. Not sure whether isopropyl would be a problem for the tank or plumbing, but I doubt it. Isopropyl is cheap at Costco. For my Porsche I only use HPLC-grade Fisher 2-isopropanol, though.

Pick your desired freezing point depression here:

I use Snow Performance "Boost Juice" in my car that sprays when under boost. I use my washer tank as my water/methanol resevoir. It is 49% methanol, and 51% water. This mixture won't freeze til around 45 degrees below zero or so. Not a problem in Texas, or virtually anywhere else I can imagine driving a 928.

This mixture works fine for cleaning the windows too FYI but keep in mind it has no detergent. Also, it is $7 to 8 dollars a gallon!! All of my original window washer system is still hooked up and functions. My high intensity headlight washer pump now feeds the high pressure meth pump under the engine compartment, so I can't squirt off my headlights anymore.

When parking over campfire to keep oil warm park little to the left and heat from fire will keep washer fluid warm.
