Default S4 front dampers on a 84 Euro?

Hi

My front dampers are pretty worn out on my 1984 Euro S model and the springs pretty rusted.

At the same time I am going to repaint the car, hunt down some oil leaks and renovate the cabin. So I am not looking at extra expenses right now.

So I stumbled upon this Koni set on ebay that seems to be complete: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/3008063850...84.m1423.l2649

Only problem this is for a S4 while mine is S - I have tried searching the forum for this combination but came up without any clear answers. Also the dampers / adjustable setup I have on right now looks a lot like the set but there is no markings on them.

So somebody please help: Can I fit the whole S4 front spring / damper package from a S4 onto my 928S?

Regards

Lars

It would be a bolt on operation.
HOWEVER I would suggest to take the new assemblies apart and grease the collars so they can be adjusted on the car,
as well as preadjusting them so they match the adjustments you have now.
From the looks of things the front shocks you have may not be able to be adjusted unless they are taken apart and cleaned up.
You can also look at the WSM for the different spring tensions and how they are identified,
the S4 springs are a bit stiffer due to the later cars weight,
but that should not really hurt performance as long as you get the ride height correct

Thank you for the reply! It is very helpful.

As the car stands now it leans forward quite a bit - and when I took the car to a track this summer the tires kept rubbing the front wings in tight corners.

So I have a notion that the PO have adjusted the front without any idea of what he was doing :-) (he had also removed the exhaust completely to make it sound more potent...)

So an adjustment will probably be needed - and the stiffer S4 springs should be a wellcome upgrade to the "soft" front right now. I am not planning on racing it but a trip to a track once or twice a year to remind myself of what this car can do is part of the plan.

before you remove the old shock and jack up the car,
take readings of the ride height at all 4 corners,
then you will have some idea of what you will need to do prior to installing new parts.

If both old and new collars are at the same height and the ride height is low,
then you know that you need to make the new collars a bit higher to lift the front
IIRC 1 turn is equal to 2.5mm of change on the front shocks

Ok, thanks - I'll make sure to measure.

Just got word from the seller that the kit have done 200.000 kilometers so I think I'll pass especially at 380 USD for a used set.

Mine have done 172.000 so I might as well give the springs another shot, play around a bit with the adjustment, and pick up a set of new shock absorbers.

those shocks are worn out,
if your going to take the time to remove them you should put on new shocks

Yup, you convinced me - didn't take much - I'll get new ones, too much hassle with used stuff with only a slight difference in price.

Any thoughts on going with slightly stiffer springs up front while keeping the back stock?

your springs are probably OK,
save for the dirt and rust ,
clean them up and spray them with rust preventive paint.
I would suggest to get some new Bilstiens all the way around

Thanks for the input. Will get some new shock absorbers, clean the springs and adjust a bit. Hopefully that will get rid of the rubbing.

...and now my blower / climate control just died. Gotta love these cars, at least they are worth the effort :-)

Thanks!

check both relays for the HVAC system.
Also another note ,
your front springs may need to be swapped out for S4 front springs,
if the set you have now is non adjustable on the collars, the non adjustable collar springs may be slightly longer check this thread for updates to this possible issue

I'll keep a look out for S4 springs and start by renovating my old ones - I don't mind tinkering a bit with the setup to get the best feel. Its all part of the charm.

Regarding the HVAC for some strange reason the defroster (which have been the only setting that normally worked, but died on me the other day) came to life when I drove the car home tonight. It was 3 degrees Celcius so I was pretty thankful that it worked :-) So the fan must be ok.

So now I have a HVAC (with the AC removed out front by som PO) that sometimes works when I put it on defrost while all other blower-settings are just dead (but the unit emits some sad sucking noises when I use the lever). The temperature-selector seem to work ok btw.

Any ideas except putting on woolen underwear?

Lars,
The symptom you describe is referred to as "the magic blower syndrome". Use the search function for this term and you should be able to get it fixed easily.

John,

Fantastic name for a problem! I have now printed one of the detailed guides and will start hunting for the resistor. Hopefully a bit of adjustment will set it right - I was starting to fear that the electrical gremlins that used to live in my ´76 924 had moved to my 928 :-)

I had actually looked at the guides before but didn't connect my "fan won't blow a all except in defrost mode" with the "magic" effect. But I guess it makes sense if the wires are touching the plate all the time and the system thinks that the fan is running hot?

Since you guys seems to know everything: My rear window defroster timer seems to be dead. The defroster works fine, but it wont turn off. Which I learned the hard way when I returned to the car and the battery was dead - twice :-(

I can't seem to find a thread with this specific problem. Is it something you have encountered?

Regards

Lars

Lars,
The rear defroster problem is probably the rear defroster relay sticking (or stuck). It's the big double relay down at the bottom left of your central fuse panel. There have been reports that the same relay can cause battery drain.
Good Luck!

Thanks John. Its always relays. I have changed the headlight releay, the ABS relay and now probably the rear defroster one ;-)
