Default Dual or single exhaust?

Would it be better to run 2 inline high flowing Borla's on my 89 car into a single pipe all the way back or 2 Borla's side to side with dual pipes adding more weight? Seems to me, especially with that post from Todd T. using single exhaust with an 850hp turbo 928, that single exhaust works ideal and saves weight.

Your thoughts?

Single exhaust sounds better for euro high RPM .....and it weighs less. True dual exhaust ends up sounding like a hot rod Camero or Mustang.....trust me on that. The 928 uses a very typical V-8 firing order not like a flat crank Ferrari V-8 and as it gets louder it sounds just like a 1967 Chevy V-8 truck where the muffler rusted off......and noise does NOT mean horsepower just noise ! Light up a 928 with no exhaust and it sounds somewhat like a top fuel dragster...lots of bauble pop and boom ! even if it only makes 300 HP

I've heard one of Greg's stroker motors with headers and no exhaust, and it is a little loud, but I liked it. Its the way a motor should sound.

What stinks for sound is a muffler and long tailpipe, sounds like a tractor.

A single large dump pipe is most efficient in terms of weight, but you might not like the sound.

In my opinion, if the exhaust makes a measurable difference in power after the first cross-over, something is not correctly sized either in the exhaust or in the rest of the engine. Most of the exhaust "power" effects are explained by a psychological response to altered sound. Therefore, sound is the main consideration for street. For track, I assume it's weight, ground clearance, and noise suppression.

i agree about sound being extremely important.

The newer BMW actually pump a pre recorded exhaust sound in through the stereo speakers. they spent a lot of time and money creating the right sound and the software to match the rpms and coordinate it with engine rpm...

the newer 997 and 911 have an expensive sound modification resonance modification system to improve the exhaust sound... has nothing to do with more power....

why spend all this money to make no more hp... customers like it

My car is too loud for some but I can tell you that I am very happy with going to single. I have mandrel bent flowmaster pipes all the way back going into a flowmaster 40.

Sounds great. So you've got a single 3" pipe throughout?
