Yes, you have to remove the cams then remove every valve spring. It is not easy or fast to do. Plus reinstalling the valve keepers can be tricky!

Instead of using compressed air and hoping that nothing bad happens, some folks use a few feet of soft nylon rope. Tie a big knot in one end, and use a match or torch to melt the other end to prevent it fraying. Feed the melted end into the cylinder thru the spark plug hole, then turn the engine until it stops. The soft rope will hold the valves firmly in place. With no timing belt installed, no problem turning the engine backwards to release the rope.

Even if you break the seal on the valves they do not drop into the cylinder.
So compressed air is fine for me.

In comparison the Schley pliers are a giant PITA.

Rob - The only place I can find this is on ebay and its in malaysia and says "May not ship to USA"

Do you have yours? Lunch?

Funny you mention this, I couldn't find mine, and I need it soon for Zombie heads. Can't remember whether I left it at Greg's, or did I ship it to Colin (I don't think so.....)

Colin, I didn't mail this to you, did I?

(This Alzheimer's thing is a bitch....)

BC, will check at Greg's and get back to you. I looked for one online recently but couldn't find them on Ebay or anywhere else.

Thanks Rob. I just ordered two different kinds from Amazon to hedge my bets so I can get some work done this weekend. If you find it, I'd like to get in line behind your own need, and I can come up and buy lunch to pick it up as I have to pick your brain about something that involves valves and timing but its not on a car.

Hey Rob,

Nope, it wasn't sent to jeff. Can't remember but there was a delay that prevented us from receiving it.

Both my new seal pullers came. The cheaper CT one works better than the more expensive S word tool that starts with a 9. Well, technically they are both Crap, and you have to work way to much to get the seal off with either of them.

I taped them up so I would not scratch the lifter bores.

So thats one head done (last night). Not bad. The tools make it easier than say, doing it the completely wrong way, with regular pliers, I suppose.
