Hi welcome to the board from some of the things being posted I think you should get some more back round info before you go working on your car.
If you have not already read the FAQ at the top of the page you should make that the next thing you do before you turn on the garage light to work on your car.
SRSLY do some research before opening your tool box.
You will still get great advice from the people on this board,
however you can also damage things because you dont know what your doing, and taking some time to educate yourself will pay off,
pretty much most new owners benefit greatly from reading the FAQ.
The links below are courtesy of AO one of our posters the links are from his page.
Also use the search function and you will usually find lots of answers to questions you have not thought to ask.
I hope that you get your car running perfectly..
Here are some links to give you more info, pay attention to the owners manual link as it will guide you to basic things pertinent to your car.
Like how to add oil

thanks, I appreciate it. I downloaded the owners manual but left it at work. I will read through the faqs tonight. as far as getting the cover off, I was refering to the timing belt cover, not the oil filler cover.

I just finished reading all th FAQS. very informative. I noticed the link to manuals and wiring diagrams only has wiring for 1984 and up... doesnt help me for my 1980.. still very cool info.

I would suggest to work on getting the WSM CD set from Roger,
it has more info than you could ever know,
including wire diagrams,
and info on how to use them,
as well as TSBs and other obscure bits of info .

Here is a great site to guide you in removing the drivers side TB cover. Most of the steps can be ignored since you're not changing the belt. It's also an excellant site to bookmark for future reference for all sorts of maintanence.

one more question... sorry if I am asking a lot of things guys... I am just really excited and anxious about this car. I feel like a little kid again.
if I jump the 87 to 30 on the fuel pump relay (which i have and it runs when I do), and I jump the 3 terminals on the injector relay, what if anything is not circumvented at that point? in other words, if it doesnt run then, what is left to be at fault?
I will be cleaning of and replacing all fuses today.

could be a brain issue.... or temp sensor II resistance bad( wigs out the brain).... Washing degreasing the engine was your second mistake right behind buying the "car" in the first place !!
You do need to start using the search function as you have yet to post an original question and reading and understanding some of the many years of information already here will help you in so many ways...
To bypass a couple other potentials to keep the car from running you can jumper the coil small + terminal directly from the jump start post this delivers a full 12 v (more than it needs) and only as a test or you can boil the oil and burst the coil.

Granted, it has a lot of issues, and I have already compounded my problems by being a dumba55. But looking on ebay at what used parts are going for, I could easily triple my money by parting it out. that isnt what I want to do however. I REALLY want to see this thing come back to the beautiful car it used to be.
the car came with an extra set of 15inch silver phone dials that I am going to put on ebay. I can probably get back a hundred or two of the purchase price right there.
I am going to redo the fuse panel today and see how it goes. I am going to put some more gas in the car as well.
again, thanks for all the help. I will try to use the search function a bit more.

Dennis, did you check to see if there is any gas in the tank? James Bailey suggested that you check this. I had also suggested that you might want to add a couple gallons.

Correct he got the fuel pump to run....mentioned it nearly started (cold start injector ? ) but was not very clear about that. So may not be getting injection, noide light would help him greatly....

I am glad that you are keeping it.

Correct the market for used 928 parts is rather depressed as the low resale values mean far more get totalled out and junked by the insurance companies and fewer people even carry full coverage....so many end up at Pick a Part or the equivalent... and well stated asking price is just what someone would LIKE to get for a part
My point is right now the MOST it will cost you to have "owned" this car is $1,200 ...you will never ever be that close to even again.... And yes I have personally sold MILLIONS of dollars of 928 parts .
