Default fuel tank crack, patch or pitch?

My 83 started dripping one day, nothing special to cause it, turns out it has crack along the area of the bottom support frame. Hunted around and found another tank, cleaned it up and same crack with some kind of a patch and no apparent leak, but I bought a new tank anyway. Date code on the patched tank is I think 79, and the one out of my 83 is between that and 83.

Patch or pitch? or part (some suggestion of saving bits to use in welding other tanks).

Pitch and get a new one. However I have heard this plastic takes to 'Plastic welding' well, however I dont know if I would trust it (temp changes, weight, dynamic stress from bouncing etc..).

I have had quite the experience with plastic gas tank repair (none of it good) and I strongly recommend against repairing it. You will only have troubles down the road- I inherited them from the previous owner of a car I had. Plastics are very difficult to work with, even if you have a "workable" compound.

The screen door in the bottom of my rowboat was leaking. Anyway I bought this spray from an ad on tv for $20.00 and….. well you know the story. Actually they doubled the order, I only had to pay the S&H.

Default Cracked Gas Tank

A recent thread discussed cracks in gas tanks, however; the exact type of plastic filler used for welding was not mentioned. Does anyone know what type of plastic filler is required???

There is a thread here in the archives. I believe Rob Edwards has expert experience as well.

Unless you plastic weld with the exact same plastic the tank is made of the repair will not work. Even when using the correct filler it is not an easy task.
