what is this ticking!?!?!?
What's up guys, I had my 85 928 for over a year now I think, and I'm pretty sure this ticking noise wasn't there before but I'm not sure. When I start the car something is ticking, it's related to rpm as I push on gas pedal it goes faster, it's only ticking for the first 10-15 min or until oil pressure drops to about 3.5 bar ( basically till the engine gets some temp I think) First start every day is the loudest or most ticking. Them thru out the day it's not bad or even gone unless car sits till engine cools down all the way, I was reading other posts and I think I will try that oil additive T.... Something. I recorded a video to make it little easier to diagnose, this one I when engine is warm/hot http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D4ZFI9HddTo

Sounds like tappet/lifter tapping.
If you remove the valve covers there should be from the factory round rubber plugs with a metal pin which should sit in the galley drain. This was a poor design, and they always fail. This part was superceded by galley drain pins, PN#92810525200.

Try to find the general area that the noise is coming from. Lifter noise will be coming from a valve cover.
As it starts to get colder, a thick oil will take longer to get to the lifters and bearings. If you're using a thick oil, that may be part of the problem if it is lifter noise that you're hearing.
An exhaust leak can cause ticking too. The sound can change or even go away completely sometimes as the exhaust heats up and expands.

It is normal for lifters to collapse when the car is not running. Usually they pump up quickly but can be sticky with varnish and may not stop ticking at all.
The old school remedy was to put a quart of ATF in the oil for a couple hundred miles before an oil change.

put in some amsoil. the 6 liter friends car was so noisy upon start up. with amsoil , it stopped making the noise. dont know if that would fix a lifter issue, but if its oil related, it could work.

The product Greg Brown recommends is Swepco 502.
Go buy some and follow the instructions. It should clean up your problem reasonably quickly.
Do a search on "swepco 502" on this forum for more info.

I would try to identify where the noise is coming from as much as possible before assuming it's a lifter. While lifter noise can be kind of common, there are plenty of other things that can make noise too.
If you don't have a mechanic's stethoscope, use a piece of hose to try to better isolate where the noise is coming from. Hold one end of the hose to your ear, and put the other end to different areas around the engine where it sounds like the noise is coming from. Something like a long screwdriver can be used like this as well, holding the handle of the screwdriver to your ear.

alright guys sorry for no reply for a long time but i forgot to renew membership , anyway i put a quart of amsoil in and then went for a 10 min warm up drive, when i came back by my parents house my dad was outside so i asked him "what do you think it is ? lifter?" he said yea prob , sounds like it 5 min later i left my dads house and went by my apt building which is literally 30 seconds away , i get out of the car with the engine still running and all i here is the high pitch frequency of the injectors!!! i was like wow you got to be kidding me ! it sounded like when i bought it , i was amazed ,all quiet almost as my girlfriends 2011 honda civic! I was so happy and still am that my 928 is all good ,but i quess the winter gremlin woke up in my alarm system and now the new problem is that when i put the long alarm key in ignition and only turn it so only the radio turns on the car is fine but once i turn the key onto the 2 position the alarm goes on and i have to get out of the car and put key in door and turn it . it started happening after i cleaned the fuse box little bit ,
is it possible to disable the alarm on 85?
