Old faded paint is now Stunning!!
87 S4 Auto, Guards red.
Hey all. I have been concentrating on the electrical and mechanical..But last week after 4 days of reading threads and web research.\, I pulled the trigger on trying to work on the exterior.
It was so discolored (guards red) that it looked pink and the body panels looked like they were painted separately and years apart.
First i washed, then clay bar..I used Meguires Ultimate Compound. Now i have tried to buff out in the past on other cars and wasn't at all impressed.
After using the Ultimate...I was stunned at how the car now looks!!!!
I have had several people look at it and ask me where i got it painted.
It came out so good that it looks wet..I really cant begin to say how impressed i am!!!
Now i need to decide what polish or wax to use.

For polish - it doesn't matter too much as long as you've got a decent fine-cut one and a suitably fine pad to put it on with. I'm currently using a couple of Menzerna polishes - they have a range of polishes with differing cut and shine levels.
As far as wax.. I've tried various carnauba waxes on my guards red 928's, and these days I prefer to use a polymer sealant, as it seems to resist oxidation for longer (we're pretty extreme UV here in Oz - no ozone layer above us). These days I'm using Meguairs Tech Wax 2 - I tried Zaino CS, but I just plain prefer the more traditional wax-like application process of the Tech-wax, which is actually a sealant, not a wax (I guess the marketing guys decided the name).
Having said which, both my 928's need me to bust out the porter-cable and give them a good polish - as they're currently a bit pinkish

this is my current favourite polish/cutter

it leaves nothing on the paint, you wash the car afterwards to remove any traces as its water soluable, so easy to remve from plastic.
then wipe car with IPA before washing - literally- on Permanon

the cleaner the paint the better it sticks
plenty of youtube vids, IMHO, two amazing products.
+1 on Meguires Tech, super easy to put on & remove

Make sure you SEAL the paint before you wax it. Otherwise it will start to turn pink again in a month or so. I used Adams in an aerosol can - spray on, then waxed and 4 months later it still looks pretty good.

Pics damn it! We need pics.
My red S4 needs this as well but I'm afraid to do it myself. Found a local detailer who comes highly recommended. Had him look at my car, he's confident he can get it looking great. Will cost a few Benjamins but I think that's better then me risking burning through what's left of the paint.
