rebuilt transmission needed?

Mileage?
Did you actually change out the fluid and filter? 9 Quarts of Dexron IV compatible plus a filter kit and you will know where you stand.
Adding 2 quarts is nothing if it is burnt or out of fluid.
Plus you need to have the car running....

Im in new windsor ny. Ive had the transmission fluid changed in 2009. I only had the mechanic troubleshoot the transmission. I will let you guys know when i drain the fluid. Its raining today. Hudson valley ny has the worst weather ive ever seen i dont know why people live here. Mickster my plan so far is to drain the fluid after running transtune through it. Then removing the valve body to clean and inspect it. Also install the k1 spring kit. Test the modulator and kickdown and see if i can check to see if the governor is working.

Good on all counts.

How many miles on the vehicle/transmission?
Don't take off the valve body unless you absolutely have to.
Don't take off the valve body until you have thoroughly and completely investigated every possible external cause.
These transmissions can be very sensitive to bowden cable tension and fluid level. So you can dump in some transtune(do this before changing the fluid and filter), check the bowden cable as I previously mentioned. Also check the wiring on the kick down switch. You can even unplug it if you want. That can rule out a sticking switch. Drive the car around your neighborhood to warm up the transmission and circulate the transtune through it. See what happens.
The 4-speed automatics are actually quite sturdy. The vast majority of them are running around just fine. Many have well over 100K miles with only fluid and filter changes. So exhaust all of your other options before digging deeper than the filter (replacing the K1 spring is fine though.)

If the fluid really had a burnt smell then it was slipping for a long time and that's not good. Ifnit stays in first then then solenoids are not working right.

Whatever you do, do NOT pay someone to rebuild it unless its Greg on this board! Most "rebuilds" end badly on here because the shop is incompetent. I would just pay for a good used transmission that is known to work and have your rear differential installed. I have seen a lot of these cars over the years and have never heard of a transmission failure at such a low mileage. Usually when these cars are low on fluid the transmission will just slip letting you know "hey give me fluid". Did you experience any of that?

I can't imagine an automatic transmission needing a rebuild at 40,000 miles, unless something significant internally broke or it had been subjected to a huge amount of abuse and/or was run low on fluid for an extended period of time.
While these transmissons do not last forever, as some people "want" to believe, they are very durable. You need to find out why it won't shift properly, figure out the events leading up to that event, and start from there.
Do not "exchange" your low mileage transmission for one of those "rip-off" rebuilt exchange transmissions, built with marginal parts, designed to maximize profit, not give you years and years of service.

I put a bottle of transtune in it then ran it lightly for 30 minutes, I went in park, drive (only able to be in first), reverse and neutral. Then I tried draining the fluid with the drain plug, it stripped. Ok so I decided I was not going to give up so I took off the pan (I know I still need to drain the converter). I had someone verify this with me that the transmission fluid smells burned. It looks dark in color. The bottom of the pan had some metal shavings (not a lot), also the pan had some thicker sludge on the bottom of it. I will shortly remove the filter and drain the converter.

I have a small amount of metal shavings in my pan whenever I take it off. I don't necessarily like it, but I learned to not lose sleep over it a long time ago. It's a 5mm allen head bolt in the pan drain and in the torque convertor. Use a pick and some brake cleaner to clean out the head of the bolt in the torque convertor. You don't need to strip it out as well.
To clean my pan, I just use brake cleaner and lots of paper towels. And you probably don't need to cover anything under the car while the pan is off. I would refill it with Dexron VI and a new filter. Do you know what kind of fluid it was filled with at the last service?

I was unable to remove the reservoir yesterday from.the teansmission. How do i remove this? I tried pullung hut it didnt budge
I want to clean it out it looks dirty. Any recommendations for removing old fluid fromthe transmission cooler lines ot does it all come out when you drain transmission and convertor.
