Penetrating Oil - interesting
For All of you Mechanic's and Self doer’s out there.
This was in one of the Military Vehicle Club newsletters.
Penetrating Oils
Recently “Machinist Workshop Magazine” did a test on penetrating oils. Using nuts and bolts that they ‘scientifically rusted’ to a uniform degree by soaking in salt water, they then tested the break-out torque required to loosen the nuts. They treated the nuts with a variety of penetrants and measured the torque required to loosen them.
This is what they came up with:
Nothing: 516 lbs
WD-40: 238 lbs;
PB Blaster: 214 lbs;
Liquid Wrench: 127 lbs,
Kano Kroil: 106 lbs
(ATF)/Acetone mix (50/50): 50 lbs.
This last “shop brew” of 50% automatic transmission fluid and 50% acetone appears to beat out the commercially prepared products costing far more.

Wally P has been talking about this for years.... I haven't tried the acetone/atf mix yet, but the kroil we have around the shop works way better than anything else so far...

I like Liquid Wrench in the little squeeze bottle. Goes where you need it and lass dripping. A spray is still useful when the bolt isn't accessible or can't get gravity feed from the bottle.

Ive always wondered..what it would take to make a tool, where accessible...you could push onto a frozen bolt head, end, or nut...and use sound energy to disassemble the frozen material in the threads.
Like an air hammer, just more for this specifically.

I knew a tech that worked at a Jaguar dealership. On the older 6 cyl engines if there was a gasket leak the head stud would corrode to the head. What they would do to get the head off was to take off the nut on the stud & replace it with a junk one barely finger tight & put a blunt tip on the air chisl & rattle it to break the corrosion loose & periodically soak it with penetrating stuff. Sometimes took a while, but
it seemed to work.

What about freezing? I've never tried this but it sounds interesting: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b0BaowQvL6c
