Default Penetrating Oil - interesting

For All of you Mechanic's and Self doer’s out there.
This was in one of the Military Vehicle Club newsletters.
Penetrating Oils

Recently “Machinist Workshop Magazine” did a test on penetrating oils. Using nuts and bolts that they ‘scientifically rusted’ to a uniform degree by soaking in salt water, they then tested the break-out torque required to loosen the nuts. They treated the nuts with a variety of penetrants and measured the torque required to loosen them.

This is what they came up with:
Nothing: 516 lbs
WD-40: 238 lbs;
PB Blaster: 214 lbs;
Liquid Wrench: 127 lbs,
Kano Kroil: 106 lbs
(ATF)/Acetone mix (50/50): 50 lbs.

This last “shop brew” of 50% automatic transmission fluid and 50% acetone appears to beat out the commercially prepared products costing far more.

Interesting Jim - thanks for the information.

I don't suppose the acetone/ATF mixture is much good for your hands though.

Neither is smashing your knuckles into iron. I'll give it a try.

Wally P has been talking about this for years.... I haven't tried the acetone/atf mix yet, but the kroil we have around the shop works way better than anything else so far...

Didn't Wally come up with this one a long time ago?

Which is why PB isnt a Water Dispersent, and WD40 is.

I like Liquid Wrench in the little squeeze bottle. Goes where you need it and lass dripping. A spray is still useful when the bolt isn't accessible or can't get gravity feed from the bottle.

Ive always wondered..what it would take to make a tool, where accessible...you could push onto a frozen bolt head, end, or nut...and use sound energy to disassemble the frozen material in the threads.

Like an air hammer, just more for this specifically.

I knew a tech that worked at a Jaguar dealership. On the older 6 cyl engines if there was a gasket leak the head stud would corrode to the head. What they would do to get the head off was to take off the nut on the stud & replace it with a junk one barely finger tight & put a blunt tip on the air chisl & rattle it to break the corrosion loose & periodically soak it with penetrating stuff. Sometimes took a while, but
it seemed to work.

Hmm..interesting. Shame you have to use 1/2 of a can to do it. *heh*

I could see applying SOME head, then using it to help as well.

I tried freeze off on a broken throttle body mount. It didn't work. The mount was broken off below the top of the hole though. It might work better if there was some of the bolt left sticking out.
