Default headers and cats?

I'm thinking of ordering headers from 928 motorsports, the mid range ones. I know I news high flow cats but would stock cats still pass smog?

The stock cats should pass a tail-pipe test, but may create some backpressure.

You will pass. But not visual if the shop even knows.

In the commie state of Cali I have heard plenty of horror stories on here about smog visual checks. Maybe get them coated in a flat black? They might hide better.

The cats should work and pass the sniffer ok if the tune is up to snuff

making the headers look old and stock is usually the best trick that ive found, so it doesnt stand out to inspectors unless they get alot of 928s. maybe look for a used set that isnt overly rusted or damaged, or possibly using multiple shades of flat paint to look the part? if the inspector is meticulous though, the cats will need paperwork once he notices they are recent, and then when lack thereof comes up he will shoot you down because of no carb number imprinted. If you get dinged for aftermarket parts, that opens a whole other can of worms from what i hear.

How stupid.

When is Cali gonna get progressive and actually cap and trade emissions?

A hot rodded car that sees less than 2k of driving a year vs a a car driven 25k a year. Why is the former illegal when the latter is actually more harmful?

I am being a little facetious. In a free society, the government should not place these kinds of controls on people.

OP: You live in the wrong state to be hot rodding a street car.

Smog checks in CA are every two years, right?

So doesn't it make sense to do these sorts of mod's shortly after the test date, so there will be a couple of year's dirt on the shiny parts when they get checked?

We are also fortunate that the belly pans cover most of the interesting bits, if both are fitted. This is something that I would highly recommend, in any case.

Rags of tranny fluid to blacken things once you fire it up never hurts either.

Your stock cat will not bolt up to the headers which came down much lower and go back farther. Which if a smog tech looks under the car he will see the low header/collectors. You will have trouble finding a shop willing to modify your exhaust due to the really big fines they could be liable for if caught. The common aftermarket cats are not Cal legal must have CARB number.
The old very brown 1980 has headers/Y pipe and registration expired last November. Have not gotten motivated to pull the headers and put the stock bits back for a test only smog. I have a dealers plate that I borrow to drive to my track events.
