Default Alternatives to Mobil1 15-50?

I've had my '86.5 928 for about 15 years, and have always used Mobil 1 15-50.

It seems that its no longer available, so I'm looking for alternatives. I've seen Mobil 1 "Diesel" 5W-40, and Shell Rotella T6 synthetic is also available in a 5W-40.

The Mobil1 web site recommends 0W-40 for a 928, but I haven't seen that around either.

Would there be any issues with changing to a 5W-40? I don't track the car.

Mobil and all other automotive standard oils have nearly eliminated zinc from their oils. An important additive which helps oil stick to parts.

Needless to say, i would only buy Brad Penn oil. Its worth it and you will notice a difference in your car.

I have been told by friends who purchased Penn for their bikes. Bike shifts better and does not overheat like it had when used Mobil one for years. They would never go back.

Just my 2 cents, i am sure others might disagree.

I guess my last choice would be 20/50 racing oil from Valvoline , add some zinc on the side.

What is the best oil for a 928?

If you're not driving your 928 in a hot climate that 5w40 may be enough. Keep an eye on the oil pressure when the car is at-temp and it's idling. If it's below 1bar then you need a thicker oil.

You can always mail order or find an Amsoil dealer.

you don't want to go with anything thinner than a 15w50, I use Valvoline VR1 Racing 20W50. I like the oil, I haven't tried Brad Penn but I've heard good things about it.
Royal Purple and Amsoil seem to be good options too. Make sure they are 20W50 though.

I'm in Eastern Canada - New Brunswick.

We have Canadian Tire, Wal-Mart, and a few other automotive supply places that used to carry it, but none of them have it any more.

Brad Penn guy here, awesome stuff and very affordable to boot.

Just go to their website and find your local distributor. I purchase by the case.

Edit: Sorry just saw your location, no Brad Penn dealers in NB. Bummer!

Where in New Brunswick ? East like Moncton, or west near the border. Presque Isle has a big WalMart with plenty of 15-50. Lots come here for stuff. There's also a good local shop which carries much, and he may have additives or he will get them.

I am using both Rotella T6 and Castrol 5w40 European blend. The Castrol is a bit lower on zinc..

I just switch to motul 15w50 after i found this article on line
PORSCHE's approval requires 120 hours of bench test of a 8-cylinder engine, alternating full charge (to simulate motorway driving) and moderate charge (road and city use) : this comes to the same as twelve 1000 km journeys, with one hour of traffic jam on the way, all without switching the engine off.
By meeting such standards, the 6100 SYNERGIE's shall protect every engine, at high speed as with the worst overheat conditions, such as traffic jams.

I find the big 5L plastic jugs in Walmart frequently. Used that when I changed my oil back in May.

Pretty much all the Mobil 1 oils have lower zinc levels EXCEPT 15W-50, which still has an acceptable level the last time I checked. Up where you live, 5W-40 may be ok, but I wouldn't use anything thinner than 15W-50 from Mobil 1.

Valvoline VR1 Racing 20W50! Been using it for over a year now and really like it. We have it at our O'Reilly's here in Texas. And it's blue!
