Default Cold air intake Phase-1

so with the fuel rails and coils in the way of the normal side tube style air filter set up i came up with this.

My only problem is the filter housing is 4" in/out. with its placement it is hard to make (limited fab tools) a filter inlet with a 4"OD circle on one end, and fan/cone that meets the air dam.

I tired to fab up some alum, it did not want to play ball, and the stainless worked ok, but i cant seems to make the sides of the housing play ball. so im trying to think of another way of making this custom cone/inlet....

as she sits right now it will work for the dyno tune next week and some puttting around town. might try to find a sheet metal shop in town that can roll/make me one.

anyone have the stock air dam/inlets they done need? or i can use to take measurement of? i seem to have lost mine in the move..

Very cool. You are an inspiration. I read your engine build thread just now too. You are not messing around. Thanks for both of these write-ups. You are helping me learn about what is buried under there in the engine. Thanks!!!

What does the back of Carls intake look like? Is it only open on that one end or is it open all the way across? What is that bulge in the tubing?

that bulge is the air filter housing. same one that Roger uses on his intake set up. Carls is closed in the back, but the price is to high for me, and the outlet size is wrong for this application.

but the main thing is the Intake temps are OOOOO so much cooler now...

That's pretty damn cool. I know that you're logging intake temps, but I would be concerned with the metal tubing getting heat-soaked running through the intake like that. Any thoughts on that? I guess it might not be a huge issue since there is constant air flow.

Oh I see. I saw the 928MS sticker on the top of the radiator and I thought it was his air filter gimmick. In that case, why not extend the intake cone all the way to the passenger side?

Duc,

Very cool. I like it!

What is the width of the piece you have mocked up there? I just built a 3D printer and if it's not too wide I might be able to build something in pieces that could be sealed up and fit in there nicely.

I can work in ABS or PLA.

Let me know...

thanks guys. the only metal under the intake is that small 6" piece. its alum, and heat soak while driving is minimal. let it sit, ya it gets hot. but the air cools it off fast.

I remember the flack I got about wrapping my intake tubes with thermo-tape to reduce intake air temps. I was treated like I was a fool, even though I got the results I was looking for.

It's your car, you can do whatever you want, i wrapped my fuel rails and the green wire connector, if that makes me sleep better at night.

Sorry for asking but will it be almost the same as the original set up taking air from the same location? I like the clean look 100% Also where did you get those 2 little air filter for the TB holes? They look very cute!

What are the before and after numbers?
What sensor(s) did you use to measure it, how was it data logged, how many did you use and where are they located?

Sensor is a GM unit for the MS set up. located just above the U, in the back (crank sensor area). i figured getting the air temp closest to the Throttle body would be better then "Cheating" and placing it at the front of the motor.

when i had that open element in the back, i was seeing 140-150 temps (car at operating temp), and now i am seeing around 80-90 while putting around the block.

here are the cute little fellas for the TB vents...

Do you have a part number handy? I'm guessing that is the same one we've used in a couple of applications, cheaper than the VW unit.

Better test would be percentage of ambient. Not saying your test isn't a good one, just a suggestion.
That's the one sensor I haven't figured out where it's going to go (ambient). I was going to use the in-filter sensor since it's stuffed up under the headlight. Then I read an article about air filter's heat soaking.
Yay.....adding yet another sensor
This is never ending

Next project is multiple temp sensors in the IC water.
