Well the transmission work was a great success. It took twice as long as I had budgeted but once it was apart I really had no choice. I pulled the tail pipe and the heat shield to access the selector arm on the transmission case. I had unhooked the cable from the front gear shifter before putting the car on the lift. I drained the transmission and found the milky substance that I expected. I pulled the pan and the gasket looked in excellent condition but was replaced with the new one that came with the filter kit. The pan was pretty nasty but I came prepared with dawn dishwashing liquid and took it next door to the car wash and cleaned it out. Quick and easy. While the pan was off I took the selector cable off of the rear. One hex head bolt and a banjo bolt came off without a problem. Installed the new filter and put the pan back up. Pumped new fluid back in to the max level without the car running and went back to the selector cable. I had some electrical tape with me so I taped the front of the new cable to the back of the old cable. I probably used more than was needed but I wanted to cover all edges that might get snagged on something during travel. I then lowered the car and fished it up through the cabin. Untaped it and connected the front to the gear shifter. One banjo bolt, and the washer type connecter that is held on with a clip. The clip had been a bear to remove so I had to finese it back on. Since the selector at the front and the back had been moved during all the work at the top and the bottom I picked park as the setting to get everything synched back up. I had seen a writeup suggesting neutral but park was easier for me. After everything was back together and I verified that the gears and movement were correct I put the heat shield and the tail pipe back up. We knew that we had to get the transmission warmed up and shift through the gears to properly adjust the transmission fluid level. Thankfully my friend suggested that it would be easier to re mount the tailpipe while everything was cold, so we did that first. Lots of up and down on the lift, with the car running, shifting though the gears. Sometimes with foot on brake, sometimes allowing the wheels to turn with the gears.
On the drive home the 85 performed like a champ. Not a single flaw in the performance of the transmission. this compared with the drive from Atlanta two weeks ago when it didnt even want to hold gear at highway speeds. It will take a few more days of driving and checking the fluid level for peace of mind but I consider this a huge success in my 928 life. While this is my 5 928 model, it is my first 32 valve and my most intimate knowledge of any of the previous cars. With this out of the way I hope to get to know my 79 in just this manner soon. Different issues but same level of difficulty for an average guy who loves his 928's.

Thank you for all of the knowledge, specific to this thread and the many ones before it.
