Default Squealing rear wheel...

...I just had the wheel bearing replaced 3 weeks ago. We are having wet weather and this wheel is squeaking and making a binding/rubbing noise that is WAY louder than the wheel bearing noise. But....it comes and goes.
When I took it back to the mechanic, quite as a mouse. Last night, it came back with a vengeance! The faster the wheel spun the lower the noise got until it went away. I'm taking it in tomorrow, any ideas what to look for?
Anything the mechanic could have screwed up during reassembly?

most likely is one of the E brake springs has fallen out,
If you get a drop light and look on the back of the hub carrier,
you will see a rib at each spring opening,
the spring has to hook onto the rib,
in some case its possible that the rib has been damaged ,
and thus the spring may not stay hooked

Thanks, I'll stand there while he does the inspection. Otherwise he will blame it on something else to double charge.

+1 on the Parking Brake spring. It is amazing the amount of racket a little spring like that can make. I was sure I had tore up my tranny when I had one break loose.

Also make sure that the brake pad retainer clips were not installed backwards. If he pulled them off and put them on backwards they will rub against the rotor which you will only hear at low speed (at least I did).

Yep... Retainer springs. You have to get them just right or they will pop loose and make a horrible noise.

Update: Took it in Monday..."I'm really busy, drop it off and I'll call you later" NOPE!

Tuesday, we both looked at it together, and it was.......the parking brake spring.

The wheel bearing job was pushing $700 and this guy was gonna gig me for some bonus cash.

Anyhoo, wheel is silent and so are the smirky Sonata drivers at the stoplight eager to point out the wheel noise in my Porsche.

$700.00 for wheel bearings? Must be mostly labor?

Rear wheel bearings are ~ $100 each from Roger or Pelican.

Disassemble enough to get at the hub
Remove the old bearing
Install the new bearing
Put it all back together
Then do it again for the other side.

I am guessing, but say 4 hours labour.

Parts $200
Labour 4 @ $120/hr = $480
There's your $700 right there.

Add 6% Fl sales tax and Bob Barker would be proud.

For $700 one would hope it was for both real wheel bearings, but the OP speaks to "wheel bearing" in the singular tense.....$700 for a pair is OK, I wouldn't care to do it for less, but if it is for one bearing replacement the OP should go back for a kiss....

Labor was $ 480 for one side.
I did get bearings for both wheels at $170
throw in sales tax = pushing $700

After searching some threads, this is avg price using decent mechanic shop.
