Smile ANOTHER FINE MESS I'VE GOTTEN MYSELF INTO

Hi Shark Fans, I'm now the owner of a '83 928s Vin#WPOZZZ92ZDS841138. 28/11engine #82DO151. A dark blue 5-speed with blue & white leather interior, 164K mi. I got it from Black Tie Classics in Strarford N.J. Like any other 30 yr old car it needs some work, (mild understatement). Daddy was a hot-rodder and I learned to "bend wrenches" from a young age. I'd like to know if anyone can provide me with some history on my "new shark". The people at Black Tie only told me the PO got it to restore & then let it sit. I talked them down from $5900 to 3K cash. I did due dillagence on the NET for over 8 months before buying it. I checked it out, had them drive it, then I drove it and then put it up in the air, NO leaks, drips or dangeling parts, great interior straight body pannels- price is right deal is real. Daddy always said " do all the cheap, easy stuff first" (belts hoses filters battery ETC). Right now I have a start up problem--cranks fine but won't fire up unless I shoot some gas down her throat, then it fires up and roars!! I have a new fuel pump & check valve to go in it this weekend. If I put my foot down on it hard it boggs down and sputters then takes off like a dog with its tail on fire!! I know I have a vac leak from a 30 year old hose & have it on order. QUESTION: ignition problem OR fuel pressure regulator?? (points plugs and dist cap next week). So far it takes me to work 2 days a week and the rest of the time I take it out and run it about 20 miles a day. The more I run it the better it runs. (like all sharks if they din't swim they die) Sorry about the long post, but any help would be greatly appreciated. SEE PICS, (PS google atrwork of Sroayma Hajime for a shark in stainless steel)

Cool.

Sounds likt the cold start injector isn't coming on. That's the one stuck on the front of the main plenum. That's controlled from the auxiliary air valve. That's on the top of the engine on the right-front of the block with large hoses on the front and back. Might just be a bad connector.

Welcome. Nicely bought. The int is a bit much but you can deal with that later. I don't know squat about the AFM injection but that's usually where the problem lies with start problems.

You've got the right plan replacing all the old hoses and lines for vac and fuel. It's prolly been sitting for a while, so drive it a bit and work through the issues as you can. New fuel hoses are critical as there have been more than one bbq 928 out there..

Wow, Great price.
Now you can spend some on it.
The more work you do yourself the more parts you can buy.
Take pics of everything you do before and after.
There are great step by step threads with pictures to help you

Default Another fine mess?!

It's beautiful! Can't get over the condition of the seats!!! Off topic, I guess, but I'd be tempted to repaint the rub strips blue. :-)

It is a EURO car 300hp S ,seats are redone(vinyl ??) dash is resprayed/painted. CIS injection does need to be run to keep it working right. To do ANYTHING you need a set of fuel pressure gauges. Also note when you order parts many USA 83 engine bits and pieces will not fit !

I thought it was AFM inj? If it's CIS, and won't start it just needs the cold start injector cleaned and checked.

Why would you be changing the fuel pump ? and be sure you have the correct one for CIS !

The fuel pump & check valve was INB with the car. (thanks PO saved me boucoup Bux) I figured it was the cold start valve, the PO replaced the hose from the aux air valve to the cold start injector with a piece of heater hose and it is collapsed,(IDIOT!!). the hose leading to the aux air valve was repaierd with silicone sealant (ANOTHER idiot move by the PO). I have the 2 hoses on order. I know EUROs are different so when I order stuff I include VIN# and Engine # on the order to increase the probalility of getting the right part. When I told Cherry Hill Porsche I just got a 928, the shop guys eyes glazed over. (envy or trying to figure out how much they could charge me to learn to work on it??) One of the shop guys said "You could spend as much fixing it as it would cost to buy a NEW one." My reply-" You're going to build SHARKS again??" Answer: NO! The PO tried to put a radio in ti and screwed up the wiring in the process- rear wiper, sun roof clock & cig lighters don't work. I don;t smoke so big deal. This is NOT my first esoteric car- I found a 73 Renault-17 GORDIDI for sale at a junk yard 20 yrs ago and brought that ZOMBIE back to life. These was another R-17 in a different junk yard that I methodically RAPED for parts. A real road rocket!! The ONLY reason I got rid of it is because I could'nt get 100 octaine gas for it anymore. (I was running it on 100 av-gas but the airfield was closed down, ( a buddy of mine from NAM ran the fuel consession, the only thing he asked was to blast it up and down the runway a few times). I found an 84 928 engine for sale on E-BAY. Seller to pull it from a car in a junkyard. The contact phone # is 856 area code so mayde I've found another ZOMIBE to get parts from!?! Wish me luck.

Enjoy the journey. 928s can be great hobby cars if you like fixing things. Most Porsche dealers now do not want to even touch a 928 let alone work on it !
