JB,

One of the things I absolutely love about my car (after only 6 years) is that it just feels like an extension of me when I'm driving. I don't pretend to be anywhere near as good a driver as you but when something unexpected happens, I know the car will be able to handle anything I can think of (or react) to do.

Glad you got out of it OK and that you were in the right car to deal with it. And congrats on the personal best!! (I'm guaranteed to set a personal best in a few weeks- I'm finally doing my first DE this October, can't wait! ).

I work as a paramedic on an ambulance. I see people all the time who seemingly "should" have died a long time ago, yet somehow seem to hang on. And then I see people who are healthy, in the prime of their life, who either have an accident, or a stroke, or something that cuts their time short. Their number is up. The bitch is that it happens while they are making other plans.

I like the post above about not moving ahead in line, though. That's why we have the Weissach rear end!

And maybe the Very Brown Car, is just a leeetle bit more brown, now

Jim: Glad you steered clear.

Charly B: Combat veterans frequently express this (when your number is up) while displaying various forms of mystical trinkets to ward off death. One example is a playing card (ace of spades) tucked into interior or exterior of helmet, or wearing a patch or other apparel with provocative or fatalistic text, "I know I'm going to heaven b/c I already been to hell" "Kill all the MF and let god sort it out." Some profess only one view, while others use both and would seem to be playing both sides and hoping for the best. So there usu is no operative rationale, sort of like religion and why it works for some and not for others.

For similar experiences, I have always assumed that "If god isn't done with you yet, then he isn't done with you!"

A few years ago, an old friend and I were laughing about all the times that we were within inches or seconds of being dead. After we got to six or eight apiece, we weren't laughing any more, and started thinking that perhaps we were getting close to using up our nine...

Good thing you weren't going faster than 70mph or you would have been there with the accident.

The 928 is great..but your developed subconscious instincts from useful track time..is what saved ya.

Track days are not just "go fast"...they teach if you're with the right people.

Stay safe JB!

I had a similar experience last week.....I was driving "at work" in a VERY non-928...I was distracted by a possible scantily clad woman (or not) and the genius in front of me decides to turn left WITHOUT using the middle (suicide) lane....so she stops in the driving lane.....I frantically hit the brakes.....quickly realize that ISN'T gonna work...so I swerve towards the square curb...somehow fit in between the curb and the car and don't hit either..... yes I checked my drawers after...

And you wrote the ticket..right?

Wow that story reminds me of the 90s (when I was still 'touring') . We were somewhere in Italy near Rome, and 2 cars were upside down (high speed collision). The wheels were still turning and you could see the bodies inside (not moving). The bus driver just kept on going, and told us 'Oh I see this stuff everyday.' I was totally in shock to see what seemed to be a fatal accident so close, and the most surreal part was the fact that smoldering engines and the still rotating wheels.

You have to just thank God/Deity of choice when things like that happen and count your blessings. None of us are promised our next breath to be honest.

Safe travels,

Yeah, I had a couple incidents in the 928 where I had to swerve around objects in the road at a pretty high rate of speed. I am positive that if it were any other car, I would have started fishtailing, spinning, etc. It handles amazingly well at freeway speeds.

Had one a year or two ago.

I was driving down a two lane country road at about 65 mph. As I'm driving along I notice a silver late model Mercedes stopped on the right shoulder. As I approach to within about 50 yards I can see that there is a woman behind the wheel. At that moment the left turn signal comes on and the Mercedes starts to move. I'm thinking OH N0, she's not going to try to pull out in front of me, is she???

I do a quick check and no one is coming the other way so I figure I can just go around her if she pulls out...

At that instant the Mercedes makes a U-turn directly in front of me! I nail the brakes and lock up all four wheels - I'm now sliding directly at the driver's door of the Mercedes - thinking this is gonna really hurt me and she's gonna die. I have the presence of mind to come off of the brakes enough to allow the front tires to get some bite and crank the wheel to the right. I clear the Mercedes by - maybe - six inches. As I'm going past, driver's window to driver's window, I look directly into the woman's eyes and see a slack jawed look of total non-comprehension. "Well, I had my turn signal on."

I look in the rear view mirror as the Mercedes driver toodels on her way and see a huge cloud of tire smoke hanging over the roadway. I go thump. thump, thumping on my way with four flat spotted tires.

She cost you four new tires but at least you made it home. Funny story though.
