from reading the info provided,
I would say its time to do an overhaul on the engine and the turbo.
once this is done it should restore reliability and performance.
The HG may be bad the turbo probably has blown internal seals,
the valve guides and seals are worn as are the rings.
Another alternative is to replace the turbo with a fresh rebuild ,
if that doesnt work then drop the engine and do the whole job

BUT dont be surprised if the Hg lets go with a fresh turbo.

You are probably right about that, but I think we will wait and see anyway. We removed the intake last night so at least now we can see the turbo. If you think the 928 is cramped, try working on a 944 turbo!
