Default Headlights continuously cycling up and down

Hello,

Searched the forums extensively and didn't come up with an answer to this one. On my 81, the headlights didn't work and the motor seemed to be stripped. I replaced the motor and now when the headlight switch is turned on, the headlights cycle up and down repeatedly until power is switched off (they stop in whatever position they were in). The motor spins counterclockwise. I also have my doubts on the wiring order.

Any help appreciated!

Sounds like a bad relay.

Try swapping it with a like kind from somewhere else on the electrical panel.

Thanks. The lights light up whether down or up so the relay is definitely suspect.

Can anyone tell me the color order of the wiring? The WSM shows color of wires referenced to circuits which doesn't do me a whole lot of good since the circuits aren't marked on the motor. All i have is the 1234 markings on the harness.

Also, the 80 motor I installed is slightly different than the one it replaced. The lock down nut is 10mm instead of 13mm and the top is domed. I also noticed that the arm off the motor rubs the motor bracket ever so slightly on the way up. Tried to adjust the headlight motor mount but can't get it to clear.

Since my this is a used motor, is there any alignment issues to address? The shaft is not keyed so I am not sure how the limiters are adjusted.

Found the wiring order in an ancient post response by Alan
Pin 1 = 56 = White/Black - High Beam On - 56 - from HL relay
Pin 2 = 30b = Brown/Red - Lights Off - 30bm - from HL relay
Pin 3 = 86 = Green/Yellow - Motor Run - 86M - to HL relay
Pin 4 = 30 = Red/Black - Motor Power - 30M - from HL relay

Now I need to figure out how to "align" the arm on the motor. Then I can confidently diagnose the suspect relay.

Try to get a known good relay first. Cycling is very likely to be the relay.

Beautiful color in the avatar car, what is the color code if you dont mind me asking?

Thanks! That's my Ocean Blue 98 Targa. It actually changes shade depending on prevailing light.

I have working headlights. Once wired properly, I installed another relay and they worked in total opposite, they would go up when lights turned off and would illuminate only when down. I simply removed the arm off the motor and reinstalled 180 degrees. Now they work perfect. The little arm does rub the the little lip on the motor bracket towards the bumper. I bent the bracket slightly out of the way for now.

This is an old thread, but the problem will resurface.
The headlamp motor plug male contacts are clearly numbered. The wire colors are;
1) wh/blk
2) br/red
3) gr/br
4) red/blk

For those among us late in getting to cleaning these contacts up (red in the face here):
The female contacts have little keepers that prevent them being easily removed from the male plug blades. Pull whatever is left of the contact boots back and study the little barb on the female contact that grabs an into a hole on the male blade contact.
Pull the female contacts off the male plug blades and clean them thoroughly, Add De-oxit and reconnect, followed up with something replacing the old crusty boots; maybe not-too-tight shrink wrap. Seal up tight the seems between the boots/wires/contacts with silicon.
