Default 87s4 engine rebuild

when reading materials, 2 broad questions emerge on s4 engine rebuild,

--there are some specialized tools mentioned like cam holders, etc with porsche part numbers, how necessary are these for those have rebuilt these engines

--for the s4 heads versus earlier design, can the cams be taken off whole or do the the camshafts have to be disassembled and parted like earlier heads?

"Special Tools" are nice to have, but not neccessary. In fact, the only one I really suggest is the cam positioning templates which you can fab out of wood if you really want. There is a file/picture around here of it.

The cams come out pretty easily. The only "trick" is to slowly bring up each of the carriers together. By that I mean give one a turn or two, then the next and the next so they all come up more or less together. Same with installing. Little by little and you'll be fine.
