Why did you need 2 new keys? Did you lose your spare? Do the old keys not work?
Definitely get your credit card reversed.

Hi all and thanks for the comments.

The one point that hasn't come is, what is the likelihood that Porsche does not have the right codes for my locks recorded? The dealer would have then in all seriousness been not guilty. But, found the statements from him not at all customer-oriented.

@Wayne : That is one hell-uv-a write up!! I will need time to digest that. :-)

@Dimi: Thanks for the tip, maybe I'll do mail order... :-) Good to have friends in high-places. :-)

Oh well, I will go back tomorrow and explain to him that the majority of people I talked with felt that he should refund the money. He could for instance at least ask for pictures of the keys and investigate what the problem is before just saying "get lost."

Cheers, John

15 yrs ago I ordered a spare key at the Porsche dealer.

Key looked a little different and would barely work - had to jiggle it a great deal for it to work at all.
It currently serves as the just in case keys get locked in the car.

I haven't tried this key in over a decade, but this is testimony that going to a dealer does not always guarantee quality.

You should definitely follow people's recommendations here. I didn't know better back then.

Get a full refund from the dealer as the keys do not work. It is just like a buying a replacement part that would need to be returned as it is defective.
Problem is..at least at the dealers up here...they use your VIN to cut the keys, and will not guarantee that they will work. It's cash up front, and you're on your own...****ty way of doing business. You would think that working with a premium product, there would be a service provided by the dealers to get this done, and with some form of guarantee.

When I heard this, I laughed and walked out of a crowded parts dept. I don't think that went over too well.... Went online and had Keys for Classics cut a couple for me from the photos, and they're perfect. Oh, and a huge savings from what the dealer wanted too.

Probably your best course of action at this point. The dealer has made their position clear. I still wouldn't hold my breath though....

When I ordered mine, the dealer specifically asked if I had the factory alarm. Even though he had the VIN, he said he had to check the box yes or no... he said it means the difference between the key working and not working...

Means the difference between the alarm working or not. If you had the alarm, the short key should still operate the locks fine (IIRC).

FWIW, I only got one key with my car, and had the dealer get me another, based on the VIN. From the time it took (in Riyadh, Saudi), it came from Germany - no problem at all, still have it, still works. When I had the petrol cap key stolen, I got a replacement , and rekeyed that so I only have one key for everything.

I am a bit confused about all of the problems getting keys made. Here in western washington I just have my local locksmith (I use Guardian Security in Tacoma Wa.) reproduce 928 keys. $30 a key including servicing the locks. They carry blanks and everything. They make the keys while you wait and when you leave you know that the key works.
Don't make getting new keys made harder than it needs to be.

Beware, if you use your local Porsche dealer for keys or anything on a 928, you are in for a heart break.................... they can't even spell 928

Rob not correct if you cut the key code for the alarm on a non alarm key your code is off by about a 1/2" in the length of the key, and vice versa.

Default Update on Dearler Response

So, I went in on Friday, and got somebody else at the service counter (not the manager this time) and explained the situation. I didn't mention that I had posted online. I just commented that I talked with a bunch of people since my last visit, and the overwhelming majority indicated that you should refund my money...

He looked into it and offered to order another key to test. I said that's fine, but I think you should inform Porsche what we are seeing. My master is clearly cut differently than their master code. Otherwise, we will just have 3rd key that only starts the car and will not unlock.

He tried to explain that there is nobody at Porsche he can talk to about keys. Finally, after talking about the risk of getting a 3rd bad key, he agreed to try to find somebody at Porsche and ask. No sense in just kicking the bucket the line... and letting people run into the wall. If Porsche dealers are working in "open loop mode" like this, I start to understand why the service is so bad from them.

I will update with any news... if and when I get it.
