How do I know if it is any good?

I've seen DocMirror test one with an ocilloscope. Don't ask me more than that because I just know he did it, I saw it and he was correct.

WSM, section 28 pg. 56. Disconnect the EZF/EZK connector and connect an oscilloscope between the CPS signal and ground (pins 7 & 19 respectively for an EZF). You are looking for 2.5 volts or more, peak-to-peak, while cranking.

For 87+ cars (S4/GT/GTS) it is the same, except page D28-11 in the S4/GT supplement, signal on pin 23 & ground on pin 6 of the EZK plug, and 3.0 volts or more while cranking.

Or just swap it for a known-good CPS. The most common failure is that the connector disintegrates, and then the whole thing gets destroyed trying to get it out.
