I've driven 86 and 86.5 and have owned an 89 and now a 91 S4.

There is nothing wrong with the 86. I did feel the brakes had a bit less stopping power but we're talking a little. I also felt the handling was just a tiny bit less robust-but again-not earth shattering differences. As others mentioned in earlier threads-throw some Pagid pads on (same as Ferrari 308, BMW M6 of the day) and make sure your rotors are good and you still have an amazing car!

Since the 86 has ABS standard regardless of 86 vs. 86.5, you still have ABS if that is even a concern for you.

Best to buy the most maintained car you can whether 78-95 and be prepared to have it need some work along the line.

85-86 are faster than 86.5 cause they weigh less...

With Ken's chips they're arguably the best "bang for your buck" 928 PERIOD. Especially with a 5-speed. I'm including the '86.5 here for obvious reasons.
