Hatch won't stay latched. Plastic insert missing completely. Shimmed it with paper (which worked) and ordered...

Also, from the photo, it looks like your strut brace may be bent.
Toss a yardstick on it and see it it's flat or not.

I didn't notice while working on the fuel lines, but I'll check when I get it back. I'll probably replace it with something shiny anyway.

Talked to the mech today. The endplay is out of spec, but hopefully not enough to have destroyed the block. No aluminum in the oil or filter. Pulling the engine for bottom end job. Good news - brand new alternator, X pipe installed, cat delete, new tie rod ends, stainless downpipes. Other bad news - no belly pans at all, been jacked it the wrong place, some leakage in tranny area probably front seal, alternator cooling duct missing.

What is the end play measurement? How did he take the measurement?

Make sure you install a Constantine clamp or pklamp once done!

.9 I think
I didn't ask how. He's an expert and I trust him. He calculated with the actual thickness of the thrust bearing when new, the tolerance when new, and the measured end play it should be OK. That was good enough for me to say pull it and check vs run on it while I look for a short block. I have another car so no prob.

Kramer will be happy to know that since the engine will be disassembled I will NOT be running Mobil1 0W40 through it to flush the mystery oil that was in it.

Cool thread; keep it going.
Question - why do a new short block - is there something to indicate that the thrust bearing wear has already started to destroy the existing block?

No, read it more carefully. If other negative indicators were present my plan was to preload to the rear and drive it as needed while I found another engine, rebuild that engine, install it in the car, then evaluate the viability of the engine in the car for rebuild with the eye to do so, sell it, and recoup some of the investment. While we can't be sure without actually looking, based on the indicators I decided to go ahead with the bottom end job. The only way tho tell at this point is to go in and look.Vinnie says he can turn it out in a couple of weeks if we get a little luck.

Why pull it? Drop the cross member and pan and have a better look first.

Be careful, you'll be doing good to get back half of every dollar you spend.

Thanks, I'll try.
Wouldn't it be cool if there was a timeline of all the pitfalls and resources available to take one of these machines from eBay or Craigslist mystery gamble to solid, dependable Grand Touring awesomeness in one place? Check this, do this, get it from here, you can trust these guys, etc.
