Default My 1987 S4 is alive

The S4 I bought in Huntsville, AL started today. After replacing the fuel pump, the ignition module, completing the t-belt installation she fired up. Albeit with an idle of 3k. But it was a smooth 3k :-)

Accelerator pedal does not work. The throttle cables are a mess.

Held the linkage in what should be no throttle and it still accelerated to 3k. It's like there is no spring action bring the pedal back. Am I faced with pulling the intake manifold to resolve this issue?

What causes the high idle? I was wondering about where the cables are routed.

This may sound weird but it happened to me: My Cruise control stuck! I disconnected the cruise control line where it attaches to a ball at the throttle controls. Try it... It won't cost you a penny and less than 5 minutes including opening and closing the hood.

That would make perfect sense!

No dice - still wants to idle at 3.5k. When you move the link clockwise it does not spring back.

could be a sticking buterfly, but I would think the spring mechanism on the throtle body would suffice to bring that back. If it is really a spring issue you will have to remove the intake and there are two spring mechanisms there at the buterfly itself and at the throtle body. I would try using WD-40 thru the vaccum line (some posts around) before removing the intake, because it would be somewhat a good gamble it did not go to sleep like this (or maybe it did).

The cable to the butterfly wraps around a pulley under the air cleaner as it runs from the bell crank back toward the firewall before running forward to the throttlebody. That cable can slip off the roller and get caught along the side of the roller.

Thats a mighty high idle. Either there's a massive hole in the intake somewhere, or the throttle butterfly isn't put back together correctly, or is jammed on something (either the cable is jammed or someobject stuck in the butterfly).

The throttle has an interesting combination of springs and arms - its worth checking Dwayne's writeup as a first port of call for pictures to see if yours is put together so it springs the right way. Pull the airbox and MAF off, and with a flashlight and mirror, or a small digital camera on Macro mode, have a look at the throttle arms and butterfly.

Can you hear the idle contact switch click when you move the throttle armature on the side of the manifold by hand?

Hilton and Brutus, thanks for the advice. I will pull the MAF and see what is going on. Is there a picture of where the pulley is in relation to the MAF? I will spin through Dwayne's write-up now.

I don't have any direct input to give you, but of the accelerator is not pulling back all the way, it sounds like the cable is hanging up somewhere.

It is right under / behind the MAF
On these pix you can see the plastic white pulley in the middle of the V at the back.

My car idled at 3000 rpm and I found the cause was a vacuum line coming from under the intake and was disconnected at the tree by the firewall next to the MAF (Drivers side). I made the connection and the idle came right back down to where it should be...

Thanks for the picture. I can see the cable is routed properly to the underside of the manifold.

I believe it is a linkage related issue -

I'll use a mirror to see what is going on tomorrow.
