GTS planning to drive 300 miles of twisty roads
As part of our upcoming road trip starting this week (Dallas – Phoenix – Dallas) we’re planning a drive along some 300 miles of twisty trails/roads.
The twisty part will take us from
Apache Junction, AZ (Apache Trail route 88)
Tortilla Flat, AZ
Roosevelt Lake, AZ
Clifton, AZ (Coronado trail –S-route 191)
Eagar, AZ (Coronado trail- N-route)
I have pre-screen some of the terrain we will see and I’m planning on taking a lot of picture.
So hereby a little 3D pre-view of what we expect to see

My wife is nauseous from those pics and I haven't even shown her this thread yet... Looks like a great drive!

That looks like a great time Herman. Do you have the Go-Pro ready to go?

Wow. That looks great! Some of it looks like a "Dual Sport" motorcycle might be the better transportation, but should be lots of interesting things to see.

Most of that looks like fun and includes some great driving roads. I love the drive from Phoenix to Canyon Lake & Tortilla Flat. Also Clifton & Morenci are interesting and Safford is pretty nice. If you have time continue down to Wilcox - skip town and head out to The Chiricahua National Monument - fantastic scenery inside the monument.
However I would not drive my GTS on the Apache trail from Torilla Flat/Apache Lake to Lake Roosevelt.
I have driven that road many times in other vehicles - a nice drive but its a dirt road - fairly well maintained but still a dirt road (unless someone paved it...?). Like this: and worse with at least one ford across the creek...
Herman - sorry I realize I did not reply to your email - I will be around in Phoenix at @ end of the week (away in California currently so was waiting for my return plans to firm up...). Will email you back with more details.

Aha Herman - I'm envious.
There are several great roads in the mountains east of Phoenix, and so much fun to drive. I was living in Tempe in the mid/late '60's, and my research professor had a '65 e-type coupe that he occasionally let me drive. In spring of '66, he took a one month trip and gave me the keys, saying "feed my cats and exercise the big Kitten". Gladly, I said (and did!). A couple of Sunday afternoons, we took drives east out into the mountains for a 100 or so miles (traffic in the Valley and mountains was much lighter back then) and had WONDERFUL drives.
I look forward to seeing your pictures and hearing your impression of the trip.
Gary--

Herman, you must have already left by the time I sent you a PM, but if you have a chance shoot me back a note about the PanAm wheels... Curious if you used spacers anywhere (or took spacers off the rear of the GTS) and what size tires you went with. Looks like these should bolt on about perfectly but might be a little close in the back...probably to close for anything other than 255's...Looks like 245's would work up front though!

I used 235/40/18 on the front and 265/35/18 on the back no spacers straight fit to the original GTS set-up they will have your speedo of by 1% (higher)
