Default Where does this Pin go? Head group

Hi folks

I am doing my Intake and Cam Covers refresh and one of the items that one of the big three recommended (and I bought) was number 38 below.
I can't interpret where they go. There are 5 (five) of this and P/N is 928 105 262 00 - Pin

Does anyone know and can help me understand? Any picture?

Many thanks

is the pin you bought a stepped pin?
if so then its used for the oil block off on the unused cam journals,
it is placed into the oil feed hole and the cap for the cam holds it in place,
this keeps the oil from falling when the engine warms up

link with pictures of the pin see post 24 for a pin picture

Mr Merlin,

That is the Pin I am talking about. Darn it! I just assembled the Driver's side Cam Cover without touching that. But I cannot recall seeing anything out of position, but only God knows now.

Would you recommend removing the Cam Cover and have it replaced or would you take a shot and check the oil pressure once the whole work is completed? I am hoping that if I get good oil pressure I will be able to leave it, but if not, it will be pretty hard to get back there. The whole area seems to be "virgin" since left the factory and lots of miles (about 150k).

Thanks

Mr Merlin,

BTW how is your engine hanging on after the few particles you found?

Thanks

You won't have enough oil pressure in the heads to oil the cams and lifters, ya gotta go back in. Sorry.

Sorry, hit the send before I typed it all.
So will the cap and pin that were there be displaced when I r&r the cover and its gasket; or is it one of those things that is highly advisable but not mandatory? Or is it an upgrade?
Sorry for questioning, just trying to understand.
Thanks

The "original" pins were not pins at all, but a rubber piece with a small "tip" sticking out that fit inside oil holes at the of the head on '87-91 cars. The "rubber" would deteriorate and fall out, allow the pin to blow out, and create a huge internal oil leak. The replacement part is those 5 solid pins that can't fall apart, nor ever move. If you are that close, and you have the parts, you should, at the very least, go back and look. If you sealed the "corners" of the valve cover gaskets, like they did originally, you can get this off and re-use the gaskets.

Wow, thanks to you all.

If these are anywhere close to all deteriorated rubber and plastic that I touched during the refresh, I certainly have to get back there.

Once I get back home, I will do it and keep everyone informed. If something weird is found, I will post some pix for the tank entertainment.

Thanks

To replace these you do absolutely require loctite 574.
Do not start this before you have it!!!
