Castrol on their website. Said that users of 20w-50 Syntec should use the improved 5W-50.

dont use that oil stick with mobil 1 15W50 or 20w 50
it might be worth sending Castrol a letter explaining what happened to your engine.
you have to go back to what you fixed last and that was an oil change to a lighter weight oil.
maybe the rings seized. due to lack of lubrication

I've contacted Castrol via their website and let them know what happened, the circumstance as well as their recommendation based on their discontinued Syntec oil. I'll see what they say, but I do think the oil did me in.

Check their disclaimers-and also check with a lawyer friend if you have one.

I hate Castrol back in our racing days with British cars Castrol would drop oil pressure everytime. We stuck with Pennsylvania crude and they were great

Yep. That's what got me. Improved 5w-50 over Syntec 20w-50.

We put recommended Castrol in our X5, but I just think this was a bad recommendation for our 928's.

I'm old. I'm a 10w-40 Dino oil guy (for American iron). But I was very happy with the 20w-50 Castrol Syntec. It was great.

I've initiated a dialog with Castrol. Let's see where it goes.

All that, but go to their website, put in Porsche, 928, 1982 (that is the earliest year as an option), 4.5L - and Castrol says 5w-50 Edge with Syntec is the right oil for your car.

I'm no expert by any means but I have a hard time believing this is due to switching from 20-50 to 5-50. 5-50 is still ok to use (sure preferably 20-50). Also by the way you describe it the engine cut out suddenly. Makes me think something else happened suddenly. What was the verdict on the empty coolant tank? Is it possible the coolant washer the cylinder walls?

Also, as you noted, the scoring is on the cylinder wall axial to the crank. Did you measure crank end play? Again, just observations from your pics.

No loss of coolant. I use a clear coolant and the mechanic was looking for green.

I didn't measure crank end play. Can take a look today.

Dan,

How do the rings look, up close? From your pic the compression ring looks scuffed but it is hard to tell from the picture.

I would also send a sample of the oil that you drained to Blackstone (or another lab) for analysis, as well as a virgin sample of the same oil, new. And if you still have any of the Castrol 20W-50 that you were using previously, I would send that also.

What was the oil pressure doing just prior to it shutting down, do you recall?

Have you examined your oil pump?
