Default Track Wheels and tires, economical --- Ideas?

On a budget, I want wheels and tires suitable for road course DE sessions.
They would be used on S cars.

I know my current 16 all seasons on stock rims won't last long.

Some ideas of what to use and what cars they came from (as takeoffs) would help!

Visual is irrelevant to me for this purpose, so if there is a great value in me chasing down some unattractive Cayenne wheels, or something similar should be in my sights, please advise.

Avatar car has some excellent 18 twist knockoff rears that I could use. But the fronts are real narrow and not an optimum offset.

I've run many wheels on track over the years, so here are my thoughts:

Never use Knock-Off on track, I've seen to many cracked or bent wheels around. I ran 17" cup I knock-offs for a year and just never felt safe on them. Besides they are heavy, but most clubs don't care what you run, its upto you.

Stay 17 if you want cheap, but tire selection may not be the best as lately some sizes have been un available.

18's are nice and I run them. Tires are more expensive, but easy to find different sizes

Go with 996 or boxster twist as those are readily available and fairly cheap (~$500 - $600) for a good set, yes offset isn't perfect but I've never had an issue with it.

I've run manhole covers, Cup I Knock-off, Boxster Twist 17", OZ Racing three piece 17", 993 18" twist solid spoke and 996 18" twist solid spoke. Currently run the 993 wheels for track and 996 wheels for road. I like 18" wheels for the track.

Best value is a set of 5 s-4 rears, 16 inch which lets you run much less expensive tires(smaller size) and get Kuhmo dot legal "race tires" which last quite a while. Not as sticky as slicks but a HUGE step up from what you have. You need 5 so you have one spare in case you need one as it sucks to go home because you needed a spare !

Funny-that is exactly what I was thinking. Only concern was the 16 availability.

I read you. I'm not suggesting the tires, just the wheel.

VT928 used 255s and 285s, which makes more sense. If Landseer is considering his 84 Euro, this may be a nice and balanced amount of grip for a DE car.
Also, I think these wheels are forged and lightweight.

Don't forget "economical" here. Tire costs get silly expensive with extra diameter and width.

Get some S4 wheels and go with stock size tires. Check Tire Rack and then look for Toyo and Nitto DOT track tires as well.

Compare costs on the tires you'd like to use. Check 225/50/16 and 245/45/16 versus some 245/40/18 and 275/35/18 sets. That's what I used to run and what I run now. The difference in grip is noticable but isn't that great. Before going up to the extra cost, spend some quality time in the car learning to drive.

I have always used the D90 wheels and Kuhmo R-compound tires in 245/45 and 265/45. Been happy with them over the years. The fronts don't last long on my S4 though..not long at all! About 6-7 run sessions is all, so I go through a set of fronts each weekend. Needed the rear steroid drop links and NOT the bigger front bar. Bigger front bar induces understeer, stiffer rear counters understeer, so I went the wrong way on that...costs me big money too! I am not sure you can actually put a rear slotted dish on the front of our cars and get away with it on track... If you can that would not be a bad way to go, but if you are going to do that would a rear 9" D90 also work up front? If so you could do 265's front and rear! That would make for a very nice balance...

For all around low cost/high performance rubber/low weight, I think the 993 Turbo twist wheels (HOLLOW SPOKE ONLY) are probably the best buy out there for a 928. Front offset isn't great, but it works great on the track where you seldom have sharp turns (the slip angle is different with those offsets). They are in 8" et 50 front, and a 255/35/18 tire works well. Rears are either 10"et 65 or 10" et 40 (I think!). 295/30/18 or 275/35/18 tires work well there. No rubbing on front fenders. with the 255/35 Michelin Sport Cups I use.

I have the et 40's on the rear, and need the fender rolled with Michelin Sport Cup tires on my '89 S4 with 295's. I doubt that would need to be done with et 65's and 275/35/18 tires. I'd have preferred the et 65's, but got an incredible deal on a set that were black powder coated 2-3 years ago and couldn't refuse it!

The hollow spokes weigh about 5 lbs less than solid spokes, and the spokes are rounded on the back. The 996 turbo has 11" rear wheels (again hollow spoke/rounded back) with about an et 40 offset. Definitely need fender rolling with those!!

Hope to see you at the Glen, or VIR - the only two tracks I'm patronizing now.

4 S4 8" rear wheels all around with 245/45-16's works pretty well....and the tires are much cheaper too.... I ran this setup on the Estate for a long time and had no issues with it.....yes wider 18" wheels-tires allow you to run much more tire, which increases overall performance but at a huge increase in price...

You are far better off spending your $$$$ on seat time-coaching vs buying go fast parts... Run Toyo RA1's in 245/45-16 as they last the longest.....

The FORGED S-4 eights are really much better wheels than CAST D-90s . Far stronger, lighter just a better wheel. As has been said track time is more important than ANYTHING else and keeping it relatively inexpensive for wheels and tires may allow you to buy more track time.
