Default HVAC blower Socket size...? the 3 bolts...

Hello, 88 S4...

I know this is probably a no brainer for many of you but I do not have a shop manual and my car is in the shop, so I wanted to prepare ahead of time. I will be replacing the HVAC motor inside the blower assemble.

The symptoms were when I turn on the front A/C the blower motor vibrated like a massage mattress in a cheap motel, really unbearable, sounds like its going to blow up

So if someone happens to know the size of the 3 bolts holding it in place I would appreciate it.

Also some people say you have to remove the hood, but I will try to do this without removing the hood...I will take pictures and create a DIY and post it, if successful ... : )

thanks Sniper....

The sheet metal screws have an 8mm head. One accessed via the boot, one opposite near the hinge on an 'L' bracket, and a long one from below at the center of the recirc flap via the footwell. Just changed the recirc. acuator so had to remove these three.

I understand you need to remove the hinge, at least, to remove the blower, although I have not done it myself.

IIRC they are 10mm or maybe 13mm - pretty standard.
Do not remove the hood - remove the valence in front of the windshield - two screws either end and the wiper nuts.
Think about a new blower motor

IIRC they are 8mm head bolts. One is located inside above the package tray, one is to the right of the blower between it and inner fender well and the last one is inside the air duct. You will need to pull the rubber boot between the blower housing and the HVAC box back and use an extension to access it. You will need to loosen the cowl panel at the base of the windshield by removing the 10mm headed bolt where it attaches to the fender. You can do it without removing the hood antirely, but at a minimum you will need to unbolt the hinge on the blower side. The hood hinges require a 13mm wrench. When I did mine I removed the bolts that mount the lower half of the hinge to the body. These bolts are more difficult to access but if you unbolt the fan first it's not too bad. The reason I chose to do it that way is that all the hood adjustment takes place where the hinge bolts to the hood. By removing the hinge to body bolts the hinge will go back to its origins location without requiring any adjustment.

what Colin said and where FJ55 said
Lastly if your also removing the bottom of the blower box you dont need to remove any parts up top the blower will pass through the hole in the firewall that the blower box fills
