Default Ignition Key

My 928 S4 has 1 set of keys. Black for ignition/doorlock and Red for gas cap/Hatch.

So I order from the web a Blank set. The Black arrives and I go to my local Locksmith
store. Tells me, no can do. Metal is too thick and his cutting machine cannot do.

Try 2 others. Same story. Stop by local Porsche dealer and they do not cut keys.
But I should send in my VIN # to Porsche and they will cut a key for me for around $125.
NO WAY.

For now, still looking in the South Fla. Area to get this done.

Keysforclassics.com seems to be the most common source for replacement keys. The make the keys based on digital photos of your originals.

Very few locksmiths have the equipment to make these keys.

I got my spare from keys for classics. They used an original steel blank, so the spare is identical to the original. Works perfectly, and a lot less expensive and faster than buying from (through) the dealer.

And Porsche via the dealer will not guarantee the new key will work. Go with Keys For Classics. I had two new long keys cut on OEM steel blanks via hi-res digital photo, guaranteed to work, for $117 delivered. Both keys work flawlessly in all locks.

I'm sending my key to be dup'd by Tony next week. I purchased a lighted Porsche key blank, 928 Intl sells it.

I will share my experience when key arrives.

Before you cut keys you need to get all the locks on the car re-keyed to match. It is not a hard thing to do. There are some procedures here on Renn List for doing this or you can go to a lock smith and have them rekey the locks that do not match the ignition.

The dealer will cut a key from the VIN - but there is no guarantee the locks have not been changed at one time in the car's life. Many of the original locks broke. Besides having the locks keyed to the VIN increases the chance of theft. Although most 928s do not run long enough to steal - so they are not prime targets. The first thing I do is to swap and re-key all my locks.

The place that makes keys from pictures does excellent work for very little money.

Tony can also change the locks to match the original key. Just have to send him the lock.
