Wheels turning when in park
I have my 1984 automatic 928 up on jack stands for the timing belt, water pump, and other assorted work.
I just realized that the rear wheels can be turned by hand, even though the car is in park. Both wheels are off the ground and turn in opposite directions when spun. Behaves the same way when shifted into neutral.
Is this normal? When I pulled it into the garage the other day I noticed that it seemed to roll a few inches in park before it seemed to engage. The car was then jacked up and hasn't been driven since. So, the park setting seemed to work a couple days ago.
Thanks for the help.

Okay I think I answered my own question. When I shift the car into neutral the diff seems to slightly catch and spin the other wheel the opposite direction of the one that I'm manually spinning. However, I think if there were any resistance on it (i.e. on the ground) then the wheels would spin in the same direction and the car would roll as it should. When I shift it into park i do hear the pawls catch after a few inches of rotating the tire and then the other wheel seems to be locked into rotating in the opposite direction.
So I think I'm all set. Please correct me if I'm wrong though!

all your doing is sending the turning force through the differential,
with the wheels off the ground they will both turn in opposite directions if you have an open rear,
if you had a posi rear then the wheels would spin in the same direction when turned by hand.
with the trans in park the wheels wont turn if the other side was held

Normal. Wheels on the ground, they will not turn in park. Park locks the tranny but not the differential. Also, normal to roll an inch or so before the parking pawl engages.
