My GTS consumption rough information from OCIC trip
Hi folks,
Just thought those of you with GTSs might be curious about this.
My car has 107K miles. It also has Elgin grind high lift cams, titanium followers, an X pipe, high flow cats, and a Sharktune.
On the way out, when we stopped in/near Hayes (sp?) Kansas, I checked the oil and found it to be close to the lower notch, so I added 1/2 a quart. I didn't check it at all on the way back... naughty me. Anyway, when I unpacked the car last night I did check it: right in the middle of the two notches. Not bad for 700 miles of spirited driving.
Fuel consumption averaged about 17.5MPG on the way back, with the A/C very on.

I don't know where Hayes is relative to your trip, but it seems you are saying you burned .5 over 700 miles? No sharkvent. FWIW, I'm trying to prod DR to get another batch of them. I'm burning about the same w/ too much carbon at the exhaust, I think. I'd like to ad a sharkvent to see if if it helps the these 3 issues. Perhaps if we both call this week?

No. I'm saying I burned pretty much nothing over 700 miles. The amount I added on the way out brought it up to half way between the two notches. It was in the same place when I got home.

I've had trips that didn't burn a drop, and others that I had to add a quart every time I got gas. No difference in driving habits between the two. It's 150 miles from my house to the convention center. Used a quart on the way up and none on the way back. Juat cruzin along at 85 both ways.
Seriously considering Herman's Provent install he showed off at OCIC.

I remember reading Herman's blurb. What do you like about his set up?

93 GTS are well known for high oil consumption....... However most 928's tend to burn more at high RPM....especially 6K+...... another option to reduce your consumption is Doc Browns fix like Rob Edwards has.......
In my experience on my various race 928's.....the only conclusion I have found is the oil consumption goes up A LOT if run near "full" on the dipstick and high RPM.....thats guaranteed to ensure lots of oil ejection in any 928....if the oil level is kept to 1/2 it goes down quite a bit....near zero in my experience.....a 3/8th pan spacer helps this as well.....and allows for more than stock oil fill while still keeping under the "ejection" threshold....

I started in Denver on the full mark and by the time I got back from Wichita I was half way between the lines. Total mileage was 1047 miles and the GTS has 54k miles. Sean made the comment that the GTSs oil usage seems to go down once the mileage goes beyond 100k.
Paul, I wish I knew you had the modified S3 cams. It would have been great to do some side by side runs to see how well they wake up the GTS. I picked up a set from Hans in Wichita that will go in mine sometime this winter.
Martin, Roger is going to be selling Hermans design when it gets finalized.

Hi Fred,
Next time you're down here, or I'm up there, you can take my car for a spin and see what you think. Dave Lomas was a bit particular, though, on not calling them "S3" cams. I think he told me they were a specific grind similar to the GT profile. I checked the paperwork, but it doesn't have any detail on the grind itself. I may call him again so I can get it straight and write it down with the car's documents.

Over the 3800 miles I drove, the GT used about 2 quarts of oil. I think the first quart and a half was used on the trip out (hot temps and high speeds)...and very little was consumed on the trip home (cooler temps but still high speeds). My GT has over 200,000 miles on it and the breathers have been rerouted so it all exits out of the oil fill. No oil was ejected through that fill and my avg. mpg was 20.
I think the hot temps really do a number on the oil (thinning the viscosity so more can slip by)..

Martin: Back in May after several calls went unanswered, I left email for David here. I got a reply that requested I place the order on-line so they could have a record, I guess. He said he would be re-ordering after SITM and to check back towards the middle of July. I left another phone message yesterday asking for an update. Maybe if you place a separate order it would help. I may default to Herman's when it is available, as I have no way of knowing when David will produce. Roger, you out there?

A reminder of some oil consumption facts:
- A gasoline engine generates just over a gallon of water for each gallon of fuel burned.
- Some of that water gets by the rings and valve guides and gets into the oil.
- Weeks or months of relatively short trips doesn't get the oil hot enough to evaporate the water.
- An extended trip evaporates the water as the oil gets hot and stays hot.
This is the reason that folks used to say that their engine burned no oil around town, but used a lot on trips...
