Cool Ignition switch

Hi. Does anyone know if the ignition switch, and steering axle are the same for a 1979, and a 1987 and older?

Thanks in advance

The switch is the same. The steering racks differ in length, tie rod thread and steering stops and boot design. However, you can swap the rack with the tie rod hardware and boots. Only the later parts are still available.

Default Ignition switch

Thanks for the quick reply.
I only need to exchange the upper part of the axle, as I have had a theft attempt on the car. The ignition, and surroundings have been smashed to bits.
Can I use the upper part of the axle?

Thanks again.

Need some clarification - we don't know what the "steering axle" is, nor its upper part....

I suspect he means the shaft from the steering wheel down to the rack..? The area that might be impacted by a vigorous attempt to bypass the steering lock..

You will need to pull the instrument cluster and parts of the dash to access the mounting points for the steering column. Just above the steering rack there is a knuckle that will come off the rack via a 13mm bolt and 13mm nut. The entire assembly will pull out and you can replace it. Not an easy task by any standard.
