4-speed auto trans shift kit
#46
So, what is the consensus on this trans. package upgrade? I’m getting ready to do my fluid/filter change and this sounds interesting and like something I might do…if it is worth doing. Personally, I like crisp shifts in a sports car.

The car is a 84.
Thank you, for the suggestion.

Basic auto transmission adjustments.
You should always start with this.
Thanks Wally.

why does the shif get soft
So tell us this guy's? Why does it require a **** correct kit to get it to shift nice. Do the stock springs get old and lose there "spring". Or is it just old school design that is not desirable my today's high performance goo roos?

The 928 was designed as a GT car. That's Grande Touring, not as the Porsche Camaro that so many have tried to turn it into. That meant smooth shifting so as not to disturb the sleeping sprogs riding in the back seats. Then, in '87 came another round of fuel mileage issues, hence the start-off in second gear, unless of course, you meant it! Then the 928 had 1st gear in reserve. This car was designed to be a lot of car, for the day, and it is. But it is what it is.

Interesting that this thread has resurfaced. The stock S4 setup is awful but it is so easy to correct- just tighten the kickdown cable about 3 turns from the WSM position and do as I do-bypass the kick down switch. Also set the vac modulator to two thirds of the way to the harsh end of the spectrum. Just change the ATF every 3 years or more freqnuently if you do many miles.
I find the optimal position for the kick down cable is to have it adjusted such that at 70 mph gentle throttle pressure will cause the car to accelerate gently but anything more than about a third of the pedal travel and it will promptly shift into 3rd and disappear from most jokers behind you.
When you get used to this setup anything less is just a waste of time

They do shift "nice" from the factory. But the factory was a long time ago in all cases, and in the intervening years some vacuum leaks from aging rubber, misadjustments during service/tinkering and other insults are likely to ahve occurred. Of course, the shift kit, or compensating by other adjustments is no substitute for checking out and fixing those issues.
Besides, some prefer other-than-nice.
That said, the factory does and vendors do offer a Mercedes spring kit to rectify a 2->3 shift flare that occurs in some cars.
I'm generally thinking along the same track expressed by Brian...haha "Pomaro", could've used that in a few threads over the years had I thought of it!
On my car, three turns tighter than factory would result in unacceptable delay/high rpm initial "cold " shifts. Yes, boys and girls some of these cars-- gt, Pomaro or just 30 year old curiosities, do see winter weather.
I'd be very reluctant to run a bunch of miles with the modulator over-cranked as well. I think there ais at least one other thread that touches on that tactic. They do make several part numbers for relatively small variations, after all. But to each his own/YMMV.
