Has any one ever swapped out the torque converters for ones with higher stall speeds and use the same transmission? I can't really think of reading any articles about someone doing it.

Just found this thread. Will this shift kit work on a 1984 928S?

Hope that wasn't implicated in your (initial) need for rebuild!

I didint read the entire page of comments so my apologies.

I race an automatic 4 Spd 85 ROW S2 - and I left the factory settings in place for a couple of reasons.

1. The tracks I run are 2nd and 3rd gear tracks - NEVER put it into 4th as I never been on a straight long enough to hit 135MPH (WHP is close at 125-130) but never to the point to where it needed to shift to 4th.
2. Downshifting - Downshifting from 3rd to 2nd at anything over 90MPH will lock up the tranny for a brief moment and throw it into a spin.
3. Leaving the stock setup in tact - I can decel from 120+ to about 90MPH and the car will jump to almost redline but not induce sever wheel lockup.

The only reason why I would put a shift kit in is for straight line racing where you want to the hold the gear to red line and have solid firm upshifts

This kit should work in all 4-speeds. I have put one in my '91 and my '85. The kit has instructions for using some or all the new springs depending on how firm you want to shift. I went full firm on both installs. I like the firmer shift feel over the mushy stock settings. It feels like a more sorted car to me this way. It kit also holds the shift longer especially from 3-4.

Apologies for the slow response, I did not see the updates. There was an outfit called bergwerks that had a 1st gear start module. Other then that, the valve body from an early 90's 400E/E420 used a 722.3 with a first gear start.

You have selections from this shift kit in your transmission, also.

Greg,

Now that my transmission has been properly replaced with a good unit and is shifting smoothly and correctly, should I remove these parts from my burnt trans and use them? Or leave well enough alone.

If I were you, I'd not want to see anything that even resembled an automatic transmission pan.....

Truthfully, if you are happy with the shifting, I wouldn't touch it. I use a minimal amount of the springs from that kit in the transmissions I do...and sometime even have to go back and put one of the stock springs back in.

For me, when they shift shifting smooth and soft, without excessive delay, I'm very happy. For the cars with "uber" engines, I have to stiffen things up a bit, to keep the clutches alive.

As they should.
And 87-up start in second unless the kickdown switch under the gas pedal is engaged.

S3 cars, or at least 86, there is sometimes a difference of opinion...though my vote is with the factory tech manuals-- not that they never have errors.

If we could get down to actual trans and/or vb numbers, that would be helpful I think.

But anyway, that's all mangled up in other threads.

Default so my transmition isnt toast?

I'm reading about shift kits etc and learning that the 928 often starts in second and often shifts with slip of soft shifting. I have been worried that meens my transition is on its way out. But is it normal after all? It does work and solid But it just seems that the shifts are not as nice as a modern car is today Please enlighten and if you can tell me how to get ALL the shift to nice and solid ( hard). I love that feeling of power transfer threw out the gears
