My sub-woofer inside the spare tire installation
Background audio information:
- Head Unit: Blaupunkt Toronto 410BT , details as per following link:
http://www.blaupunkt.de/index.php?id...fproducts2_pi1[view]=1353
- Door speaker's: Hans's marvelous speaker set & beautiful crafted passive crossover's, details as per following link:
https://rennlist.com/forums/9543424-post285.html
There is of course the very nice and perfectly matching SharkWoofer, as per link https://rennlist.com/forums/928-foru...arkwoofer.html , however my personal preference was and is to keep the spare tire present. My reason: additional safety, as the spare tire is improving the overall crush-zone strength in case of (what I hope will never happen) rear end collision.
So my search was on for an ultra compact active sub-woofer that would fit inside the spare tire, with good overall performance / reviews. And I found it with the In Phase USW-10 Ultra Compact Active Subwoofer, details as per following link:
http://www.inphaseaudio.co.uk/produc...bwoofer/usw10/
Key dimensions are: size 270mm (D), 69mm (H). In stand-by switched off mode I measured it only using up 0,2mA so definately not draining your battery. And yes, it really is this small:
My thank once again towards Alan Moore , as his "Battery Box upgrades" web-page ( http://www.moore-fun.net/Porsche/battery_box_fusing.htm ) gave me the insight and inspiration of where and how to house additional fuses. From thick plastic (I bought a plastic storage box cover for this purpose) I cut out the following form to act as an isolator, red numbers indicates mm:
And installed a six (6) ATC fuse-panel on it, so to have enough spare fuse places for possible future electrical "wants". And as you can also see: enough free space on the plastic isolator board if I ever need so.
I only used one (1) 4 mm stainless nut & washer & bolt to attach the plastic isolator board (I had planned to use three, however the one was absolutely fine - it is going nowhere).
The additional wire to add from the USW-10 sub-woofer is their supplied blue-white remote power on/off sensing wire (their sub-woofer comes with all needed wires of sufficient length), which is connected to pin-5 of the DIN head-unit (the same as the antenna amplifier wire). My Head Unit DIN numbering is:
1 = Sub-Out GND
2 = Radio Mute
3 = Sub-Out
4 = Permanent +12V
5 = Aut. antenna (max. 150 mA)
6 = Illumination
7 = Kl.15/Ignition
8 = GND
And hereby a passenger side shoot (and yep: I have several other things wired up, in case you wonder about all kind of black, yellow and red wires you might not have in your car):
Sub-woofer wires (remote level control, remote power on/off sensing wire, line-level RCA audio wires) wrapped up in blue tape (and yes: I have three non-standard relays on my CE panel: PURPLE "381" VW day-light running relay 431.951.253.G, BLACK "197" VW digital wiper relay 3B0.955.531 and a local Finnish "Motonet" RED 3 wires LED blinker light relay):
Wires into the empty spare-wheel well and spare tire put back in place:
I decided to not place the sub-woofer on a wood (typical 1/2" thick MDF) panel, as then there would be about no space = less/almost no air left. Hence I used a 3mm thick aluminum profile strip, which I measured and made into shape (37 cm circle shape to cut out):
Then for the sub-woofer not to be able to move about at all, I bought a thick audio foam tile (made from three layers of: egg-shape black audio isolating foam, grey rubber layer and then a grey foam layer) and measured and cut it into shape:

And put it all into place:
Finishing touch: original Porsche spare tire plastic bag + working gloves stored in there as well:
Topped up with Jerry Feather's excellent ABS spare-wheel cover:
And finally covered up with the carpet:
And this is where I put the sub-woofer remote level control:
And take my word for it: this sub-woofer sounds really good, even when totally hidden in this way!

The system I have was installed probably 10 yrs ago, and takes up most of the hatch. It's great that you can have a 10 inch and your hatch area too. Great write up.

This 6.5" self contained sub-woofer with build-in amplifier totally belies it's sonic punch: it's really good and very well made (for example: the enclosure is solid die cast aluminium) - I'm very pleased with it. The remote level control is usually around 1/2 way up in my set-up for most music styles (from rock, punk, disco to classical, whatever suits my mood ), and it's entirely possible to shake the neighboorhood if one would wish to do so...
As always: no association, just a happy customer reporting so.

Bill: I'm happy to report: insignificantly little for my ears. I have however not done any audio spectrum measurements of before and after, so to substantiate such with real facts - whenever I do so I'll post them in this thread.

When the driver is back in the corner like that, it couples to the car really well and you don't need a lot of cone to make a lot of bass. 99% of installs I think are over kill on bass even for a boomer.

From memory (as this is almost 8 years ago): took the 2 wires from pin 1 & 3 towards two RCA sub-plugs that I soldered together, so that the RCA plugs and it's wiring that came with the sub-woofer could be fully used - without the need to molest those.

A I have changed out my Blaupunkt 410BT head-unit for another one during the year 2014, it's not longer possible for me to check on it now.

Another - vague - memory is that I might have had some problem with getting that sub-out port to work from that Blaupunkt 410BT head unit. I might have therefore made use of the front out left- and right-RCA level out from it (but definitely not from the speaker outputs), so to make it work towards the sub-woofer.

A search for spare tire subwoofer brought up a bunch of different options.
