Default Clicking from rear when windows or sunroof open

Car is a 1991 S4.

Question...when the windows or sunroof switches are engaged to open or close I hear a relay click (not unexpected) but it sounds like it's coming from the rear of the car.

It was my understanding there is no relay in the CE Panel for these model years. It is also my understanding the control unit is in the driver's door for both windows and the Sunroof.

So-where is the click coming from?

How do the wires route in the S4? I assume there is an interminably relay somewhere-but I do not see it in the schematics or PET...

My passenger window does not work. Sunroof and driver's side do. When the Passenger window switch is engaged in either direction I do get the exact same click as I get from the driver's side or sunroof so I do not believe it is the switch.

I have a motor and regulator on hand for the passenger side if needed but want to rule out any other gremlins before doing surgery on the door.

Thanks in advance!

Michael

Mike,
There is the rear wiper relay in the rear in proximity of the ground strap back there.
This relay has 2 lines (a Black/Blue and a Green/Black) which share harnesses with window/sunroof lines.
I'm not that familiar with your MY so you might want to spend some time with the WD.

Thanks Craig-I am familiar with that relay but it never occurred to me that it might be tied to the windows and sunroof considering they share the same pod...

According to the wiring diagram the ground point for the control unit is Ground Point V (near firewall on passenger side under engine).

Hmmm....

Isn't there a window control unit in the later models under the driver's seat? I was just inside the DS door of the GTS and did not see any control unit there.

That is a possibility. I do know the memory for the seats is there. Maybe I misread PET.

Didn't look in WSM (was late when I posted). Will crack it open and see.

The window/sunroof controller is under the driver seat. You can see and, with some effort to get at the nuts on its cover, remove it by putting the seat all the way forward. It has a bunch of relays inside and they do click a lot. You are hearing the relay for your non-working window. I would work backward from the window motor, looking for power at the motor.

Thanks Bill-that confirms above and exactly what I needed. I've now eliminated the switch and hopefully the controller. Will have the door open in the next few days...and a chance to sound proof and fix the vinyl on the top of the doors!
