ya I was driving home and it quit.
I checked under the hood and the Oil pump gear walked off and the belt piled up.

Roger can you give me a quote on parts.

That sure looks like the oil pump gear.

You know what Mark, you are right. ILL change the title from water to oil.

There fixed the heading to Oil pump

So Mark if you had to guess would it be that the bolt was not correctly torqued or could it be something else.

I am hoping the same thing but from what I have read is that I would need horse shoes wayyyy up there to have not bent a valve.

I hope no valve damage has happened. Its possible that the nut came loose or you tightened it so much that it ended up breaking off it only takes 30 to 40 NM (did you do 30 to 40 ftlb??). Did you have any belt warning lights before this happened?
I have a used pump from an 88 I will sell for $115 bucks if you need one.

I think you should start taking the timing belt apart to see the extend of the damage. Sorry that this happened.

OUCH, pull the engine you will have to do a valve job on both heads you will have bent valves.

The oil pump gear looks like an an aluminum part so it should be replaced with the steel gear.

Not really sure how this happened but if you were working on the oil pump then you might find damage to the oil pump shaft,
the aluminum gear should have a 1mm spacer behind it when you fit the steel gear the spacer gets removed.

Roger says a new pump steel gear is $75 and a belt is around $35-$40.
I already have been offered a good used pump for $115
ILL put that together and do a compression test but I expect the heads will need to come off and I just dont have the time right now. But ILL see if I can squeeze it in.
The only explanation is that when I had it apart 3 years ago when I did the main bearings and oil pan, I did not get it torqued correctly. Funny as I remember thinking about using loc-tight on it but I didn't and the nut came loose.

The likelihood of valve damage is so high, I have to say Stan's right to say pull the motor. BUT, I've had 2 local cars that looked like a disaster (maybe not quite as bad as that) and neither had bent valves. I don't know of any way to tell for sure other than to string a timing belt and check leakdown or compression.

For an original aluminum gear, that's in remarkably good shape - must be very low miles.

To the best of my knowledge there is no specific torque in the WSM for that nut. I suppose 30-40 Nm is reasonable.

There is no way you didn't bend valves. Putting it back together is just a waste of time. I know you are hopefull but theres just no way there aren't bent and/or broken valves. In my Timing belt failure engine I had every single valve bent or broken. Good luck. I'm sorry you had this problem, I know you haven't had it back together for that long.

Edit: I stand corrected. If Bill Ball says he's seen two that were without bent valves I guess it's worth a shot. Cross all of your fingers and toes.

The reason for the compression test will be part of the diagnosis of which cylinders need valves. Though it will be quite apparent by the marks on the pistons I think.
I have the time and since it is coming apart again, I may have to take it to the next level.
I really wish I had the coin for a twin screw at around 9 lb
